Yes—an Xbox-compatible Astro A40 TR and MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 can connect to an Xbox Series S over USB. Update the MixAmp firmware first to enable full USB audio and Game/Voice balancing, and do not follow old Xbox One instructions that require plugging optical audio into the console: Series S has no optical audio output.
Check the MixAmp edition and generation
Astro’s Series X|S setup guidance covers the A40 TR headset with the MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4. The Xbox bundle has platform-specific documentation; confirm that your MixAmp is the Xbox-compatible edition and check its platform marking or switch before connecting it. A40 and MixAmp names cover more than one product generation, so compatibility for every model is not established by the Gen 4 setup guide.

Connect the A40 MixAmp to Xbox Series S
- Connect the A40 TR headset to the MixAmp using the headset’s inline mute cable.
- Connect the MixAmp to the Xbox Series S by USB.
- Before relying on full USB audio or Game/Voice balancing, update the MixAmp firmware using ASTRO Command Center software. ASTRO identifies this update as required for those functions on the new Xbox. Its setup video does not state a current firmware version, so use the software’s instructions rather than relying on an unverified version number.
- On the Xbox, open the current audio settings and choose the headset and spatial-audio format you want to use. Menu wording can change; follow the options shown on your console.
Why Xbox One optical instructions do not apply
The Gen 4 quick-start guide includes an Xbox One configuration using Micro-USB and optical TOSLINK. That is legacy guidance, not a direct Series S setup: Microsoft says the optical audio option is available only on older Xbox consoles, not Xbox Series X|S and later. Do not try to plug an optical cable into the Series S expecting a console optical port. An external optical source or adapter would be separate optional hardware, outside the direct USB setup documented by ASTRO. See Microsoft’s spatial sound documentation.

Set up Dolby Atmos if you want spatial audio
Dolby lists the ASTRO A40 TR among its headphone products and points users to Dolby Access. Dolby also says Xbox Series X|S owners can download the app to configure supported audio devices or start a Dolby Atmos for Headphones trial. Install or open Dolby Access and follow the app and console prompts for the available setup.
Do not assume an Atmos license is included with every A40 or MixAmp bundle. The exact product listing or packaging, plus the account and app prompts, determine whether a license or trial is available. Dolby’s Astro A40 TR product page identifies the headset, but does not establish a universal included license for all MixAmp generations.

If the setup does not behave as expected
- No full USB audio or Game/Voice balancing: Check that the MixAmp is the Xbox-compatible model and install its firmware update with ASTRO Command Center.
- Your guide tells you to use optical audio: Check whether it is an Xbox One diagram. Series S has no console optical output, so use the documented USB connection instead.
- Your model is not a Gen 4 Xbox MixAmp Pro TR: Check the exact model and platform marking against its manufacturer documentation. The Series X|S Gen 4 video does not establish compatibility for every A40 headset or MixAmp generation.
- Dolby Access asks about a license or trial: Follow the current app prompt and verify what your exact bundle includes; support for an A40 TR does not mean every bundle includes a license.
