What “using a disc drive on multiple consoles” can mean
The answer depends on whether you mean the detachable drive, a physical game disc, or digital games tied to a PlayStation account. Sony’s instructions cover setup and pairing of the detachable drive, but do not describe it operating on two consoles at once or set out rules for transferring it repeatedly between consoles.

One drive connected to two consoles at once
Sony’s product and setup information describes attaching and pairing the drive with a PS5. It does not describe simultaneous use on two consoles, so do not rely on one detachable drive serving two PS5s at the same time. Sony’s setup guide says an internet connection is required to pair the drive and console during setup.
Moving the drive between consoles over time
Sony’s public instructions do not say whether each move requires another pairing, whether there is a transfer limit, or whether repeated transfers are supported. If you need to move a CFI-ZDD1 drive between specific consoles, ask PlayStation Support to confirm before depending on that arrangement.

Playing one physical game disc on different consoles at different times
This is not the same as transferring the detachable drive. Sony’s PS5 transfer instructions say to insert a disc-based game into the destination console to install it. The console being used needs a compatible disc drive, and the physical disc must be available to play the disc-based copy.
Which PS5 consoles support the detachable drive?
The CFI-ZDD1 is Sony’s detachable PS5 disc drive. Compatibility depends on the console’s model group, not just its appearance or the fact that it is a PS5. Sony’s US setup guide lists CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups; Sony’s UK product listing also names CFI-2100. Because regional product information and model listings can change, check the exact model number on your console and the Sony listing for your region before buying.

Sony’s setup steps require turning off and unplugging the console, letting it cool, removing the appropriate cover and feet, attaching the drive, fitting the cover and feet supplied with it, and reconnecting power. Pairing requires an internet connection. The UK product listing says the drive supports PS5 games, supported PS4 titles, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback; confirm local product details before purchase.

Physical discs and digital purchases are different
A physical disc is used in the console where you want to play that disc-based game. Digital purchases are account-based; Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting can let other users on one designated PS5 access the account owner’s purchased and downloaded games and media. It does not share an optical drive or make a physical disc available on another console.

Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on one PS5
- On the PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Enable the setting on the PS5 you want to share games with. Sony says it is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in to PlayStation.
- To switch sharing to another PS5, turn the setting off on the previous console before enabling it on the new one.
Sony limits Console Sharing and Offline Play to one PS5 at a time. Its support page explains which purchased and downloaded games and media other users can access, including when that console is offline.
Sony also says selected PlayStation Plus benefits can be shared on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play activated and one PS4 activated as the primary PS4. The benefits have limits and are not a way to share a disc drive or enable Console Sharing on multiple PS5s. See Sony’s PlayStation Plus sharing guidance for the eligible benefits.
