Can you use a portable party speaker in the rain? Sometimes—but only when the manufacturer says that exact model can handle rain, and only under its stated conditions. A splash-resistance rating is not permission to submerge a speaker, expose open connectors, or leave it out in a storm.
Check the exact model before taking it outdoors
Find the speaker’s model number and consult its manufacturer’s product page or manual. Look for an explicit statement about rain, the water-resistance rating, and any conditions involving covers, ports, or placement. If the instructions do not establish that rain use is suitable, keep the speaker under cover rather than assuming it is protected.

For example, JBL describes the PartyBox On-The-Go Essential as IPX4 splashproof and specifically says it can be used in rain. That is a claim about this product, not every portable party speaker. JBL lists 100 W output and up to six hours of playtime for this model; those are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent comparative test results.

IPX4 indicates protection against splashing water under specified test conditions; it does not mean a speaker is waterproof in every situation. Sony’s ULT TOWER 7 help guide describes its IPX4-equivalent test as water sprinkled from every direction at 10 litres per minute, from 300–500 mm away, for 10 minutes. Sony says the speaker is not designed for water pressure and should not be immersed.

That test description is not a safe real-world rain-duration limit. The cited manufacturer information does not establish how long any model can remain in rain or guarantee how a particular unit will fare in a storm. Do not turn a rating into an invented time limit.
Follow the placement and connector instructions
Water protection may depend on how the speaker is set up, and connectors can be more vulnerable than the enclosure.

- Close the covers fully: Sony says the ULT TOWER 5 rating applies when all ports and covers are firmly closed.
- Use the required orientation: Sony specifies that the ULT TOWER 5 must be vertical for its IPX4 claim. For the ULT TOWER 7, Sony states, “When placed horizontally, this speaker is not water resistant.”
- Keep water away from connectors in use: Sony warns against exposing the ULT TOWER 7’s connectors to water or droplets while they are being used. Its ULT FIELD 7 guide also says the supplied accessories and connectors are not waterproof.
- Avoid pressure and immersion unless the model’s instructions specifically allow them: Splash resistance alone does not cover either.

These figures and protection descriptions are manufacturer-published claims for named products, not independent comparative test results. A higher rating does not establish that another model, its accessories, or its connectors share the same protection.
Is your party speaker waterproof, or safe to leave outside?
“Waterproof” by itself is not enough to decide. Check the exact model’s rating and manual, whether rain is expressly permitted, the required orientation and closed covers, and any warning about ports or connectors. If the manual does not clearly support the conditions you expect, move the speaker under cover. The cited product information does not provide a universal safe rain duration, failure rate, or expected service life in wet conditions.
