Mattress materials and cleaner models differ: Rowenta lists mattresses as a supported surface for its Clean It IN5020F0, while Rug Doctor’s July 2024 manual excludes mattresses and toppers made with memory foam, foam, or goose down.
Check the mattress and cleaner instructions before cleaning
Start with the mattress care tag or the mattress maker’s care instructions. Then check the manual for your exact cleaner, including any limits on mattress use, materials, tools, or cleaning solution. A machine’s general claim that it cleans upholstery does not by itself mean it is suitable for a mattress.

- If the mattress maker prohibits wet cleaning, do not use an extractor.
- If the cleaner manual excludes mattresses or the mattress material, do not use that machine on it.
- If either set of instructions is missing or unclear, ask the relevant manufacturer rather than assuming an upholstery attachment makes the cleaner safe.
Why the answer depends on the model and mattress material
Rowenta Clean It IN5020F0
Rowenta’s official Clean It IN5020F0 support page names mattresses among the surfaces this portable spot cleaner is designed to clean. That is permission for this specific model, not blanket approval for other cleaners or every mattress. Rowenta also says to add the solution amount indicated on the clean-water tank and not exceed it, to avoid residue.

Rug Doctor’s portable spot-cleaner guidance says water cleaning is suitable for upholstery marked W or W/S, and not for fabric marked S, X, or Dry Clean Only. Those codes are a screening step for the upholstery guidance; they do not override a more specific restriction on mattress use or material.

Rug Doctor also directs users to test the tool and solution on a hidden area, let it dry, and stop if the color is affected. Its July 2024 manual separately says not to use its machines or products on mattresses or toppers made with memory foam, foam, or goose down.

Use only the tool and solution specified for your cleaner, and follow its operating directions. Where the model supports it, Rug Doctor’s upholstery-tool instructions call for a spray pass followed by a pass without spraying to extract more liquid. The same guidance warns, “Do not overwet upholstery.” Rowenta’s tank guidance likewise says not to exceed the specified solution amount.

Test a hidden spot first and let it dry before proceeding. Apply as little liquid as practical, and make dry extraction passes if your model’s instructions support them. The cited manufacturer instructions do not establish a universal mattress drying time, so do not rely on a fixed number of hours; follow the mattress maker’s care guidance and the cleaner manual.

Quick decision path
- Read the mattress care tag or manufacturer instructions for wet-cleaning limits.
- Read the cleaner manual for mattress and material restrictions, approved attachments, and solution directions.
- If either source prohibits the proposed cleaning, do not use the portable extractor.
- If both allow it, test a hidden area, use the specified tool and solution, limit moisture, and extract without spraying where the model directs.
- If permission remains unclear, contact the mattress or cleaner manufacturer instead of inferring compatibility from portability or an upholstery tool.
