Can You Use a MacBook Charger to Charge an iPhone?

A USB-C MacBook power adapter can charge an iPhone. This guide explains the right cable for USB-C and Lightning iPhones, USB Power Delivery, fast-charge limits and slow-charging fixes.

Yes. Apple says a compatible USB-C power adapter supplied with a Mac laptop can charge an iPhone, including for faster charging when it is rated at 20 watts or higher. The cable must match the iPhone: USB-C for iPhone 15 and later, or USB-C to Lightning for earlier models.

The important distinction is between the MacBook’s power adapter and its charging cable. A USB-C MacBook adapter is suitable when paired with the right cable; a MagSafe-only MacBook charging cable is not an iPhone connector.

What people mean by “a MacBook charger”

The phrase can describe two separate parts:

  • Power adapter: the wall plug that converts outlet power into USB-C power.
  • Cable: the lead that connects the adapter to the phone.

Apple’s compatibility guidance applies to a USB-C power adapter, including a 20W or higher adapter supplied with a Mac laptop. It does not mean every cable that came with every MacBook can plug directly into every iPhone. Connector type and charging capability still matter.

Apple’s wording is direct: “If you have a 20W USB-C power adapter or higher-wattage USB-C power adapter – such as the one that came with your Mac laptop – you can use it with your iPhone for faster charging.” That statement concerns the USB-C adapter, not a MagSafe charging puck or a cable with a Mac-specific connector.

Check the iPhone’s port before choosing a cable

iPhone type Phone port Cable from a USB-C MacBook adapter What to check
iPhone 15 and later USB-C USB-C to USB-C The cable should support the charging requirements of that iPhone generation.
Earlier iPhone models Lightning USB-C to Lightning The Lightning connector must fit the phone, and the cable should meet the applicable fast-charge requirements.

If your MacBook setup has a USB-C adapter but only a USB-C to USB-C cable, that cable will not fit an older Lightning iPhone. Conversely, a USB-C to Lightning cable cannot plug into the USB-C port on an iPhone 15 or later. The adapter can stay the same; the cable changes with the phone.

When a MacBook adapter is the right choice

A compatible USB-C adapter

A USB-C adapter rated at 20W or more is the category Apple identifies for faster iPhone charging. A MacBook adapter can therefore be useful when it is already available at home, in an office or in a travel bag. You do not need to purchase another adapter solely because the existing one was supplied with a Mac.

A third-party USB-C adapter

Apple’s fast-charge guidance says a third-party USB-C adapter should support USB Power Delivery. Look for USB-C Power Delivery (often written as USB PD) in the adapter’s specifications. A USB-C-shaped port alone does not establish that it meets the fast-charge requirements for your iPhone.

A MagSafe-only MacBook cable

Some Mac laptops use a MagSafe charging cable that terminates in a magnetic Mac connector. That cable cannot connect directly to an iPhone. Use the USB-C power adapter with a separate USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to Lightning cable instead. Apple’s guidance in this context is about USB-C power adapters.

Why a higher-wattage adapter does not guarantee one charging speed

The wattage printed on an adapter is its available capability, not a promise that every connected device will charge at that rate. Fast-charge performance depends on the iPhone model, the cable, the adapter’s USB Power Delivery support, temperature, settings and what the phone is doing while connected.

An adapter with more wattage can be compatible without making an older iPhone charge at the same speed as a newer model. Apple publishes model-specific requirements and test results rather than one universal time for all iPhones. Treat any advertised percentage or number of minutes as valid only for the named iPhone, cable, adapter and test conditions.

Apple’s published fast-charge example for 2026

Apple says iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max can reach about 50 percent battery in around 15 minutes when used with the specified USB-C cable and a 60W-capable adapter that supports the stated USB Power Delivery and Adjustable Voltage Supply requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple conducted that test in July 2026 with preproduction phones and software. The result is therefore a model-specific, controlled figure—not a guarantee for every iPhone, MacBook adapter or charging situation. Apple notes that charge time varies with the adapter, settings, use and environment. Do not apply the 15-minute result to an earlier iPhone or assume that any 60W adapter and any cable will reproduce it.

For other generations, consult Apple’s “Fast charge your iPhone” guidance for the requirements and test conditions attached to that particular model. The relevant question is not simply “How many watts does my MacBook adapter have?” but whether the complete adapter-and-cable combination meets the iPhone’s published requirements.

How to charge an iPhone with a MacBook adapter

  1. Identify the iPhone port. Look at the bottom edge of the phone. iPhone 15 and later use USB-C; earlier models use Lightning.
  2. Inspect the MacBook power adapter. Confirm that it has a USB-C output. A MagSafe cable by itself is not an iPhone charging connection.
  3. Select the matching cable. Use USB-C to USB-C for an iPhone 15 or later, or USB-C to Lightning for an earlier iPhone.
  4. Check charging capability if speed matters. For faster wired charging, verify that the adapter is at least 20W and that a third-party adapter supports USB Power Delivery. The cable also needs to meet the requirements for the phone generation.
  5. Connect the adapter to a wall outlet. Plug the cable into the adapter, then connect the phone end firmly to the iPhone.
  6. Confirm the charging indicator. The iPhone should show its charging status. If it reports slow charging, follow the checks in the troubleshooting section below.

There is no special MacBook setting to enable. The same USB-C adapter can be used for the Mac and iPhone, provided the cable and power-delivery requirements are appropriate for each device.

What can make charging slower

Other devices sharing the adapter

A multiport adapter may divide its available output when another device is connected. Apple also warns that a computer or USB hub powering other devices can leave less power for the iPhone. For the quickest charge, connect the iPhone directly to the adapter’s appropriate port and disconnect unnecessary devices.

Using the phone while it charges

Intensive app use and an active display consume power while the battery is being replenished. Apple identifies demanding use as a factor that can reduce charging speed. Navigation, games, video recording and other sustained workloads can make the percentage rise more slowly than it would with the phone idle.

Temperature

Apple says charging can slow or pause in extreme temperatures. Move the iPhone to a moderate environment, keep it out of direct heat and allow a hot phone to cool before judging the adapter’s performance. A pause caused by temperature protection is different from an incompatible charger.

Adapter or cable limitations

A cable or adapter that does not meet the fast-charge requirements can still provide power while charging more slowly. Check the adapter’s USB Power Delivery support and the cable’s compatibility instead of judging it by the shape of its connector alone.

How to troubleshoot a “Slow Charger” message

With iOS 18 and later, Apple says the iPhone can display a “Slow Charger” message when a higher-wattage charger could improve the charging experience. The message is a prompt about speed, not proof that the phone cannot charge.

  1. Read the setup. Confirm whether the adapter is a USB-C model and whether its output is shared with another device.
  2. Check the cable type. Make sure a USB-C iPhone has a USB-C to USB-C cable and a Lightning iPhone has a USB-C to Lightning cable.
  3. Verify USB Power Delivery. If the adapter is not Apple-branded, look for USB PD in its specifications. A higher number printed on an adapter does not replace this check.
  4. Connect directly. Remove hubs, computers and other accessories from the charging path and plug the phone into the adapter.
  5. Reduce load. Lock the screen and pause demanding apps while charging.
  6. Address heat or cold. Let the phone return to a normal operating temperature if charging is slow or paused.
  7. Reassess the result. If the phone charges normally after these changes, the earlier slowdown was likely caused by shared power, usage or environmental conditions rather than the MacBook adapter itself.

Practical combinations by situation

Situation Use this connection Likely consideration
iPhone 15 or later at a wall outlet USB-C MacBook adapter plus USB-C to USB-C cable Check that the adapter and cable meet the model’s fast-charge requirements.
Earlier iPhone at a wall outlet USB-C MacBook adapter plus USB-C to Lightning cable The phone’s Lightning port determines the cable; the adapter can remain USB-C.
MacBook adapter powering several devices Connect the iPhone to an available USB-C port Combined demand may reduce the power available to the iPhone.
MacBook with MagSafe charging lead Use the Mac’s USB-C power adapter separately with the correct iPhone cable The MagSafe connector does not plug into an iPhone.

What to check before relying on the setup while traveling

  • Carry the cable that matches the iPhone, not only the cable used by the Mac.
  • Check the adapter label or specifications for USB-C output and, when fast charging is important, USB Power Delivery.
  • Remember that a multiport adapter may behave differently when another device is connected.
  • Expect charging behavior to change in a hot car, a cold outdoor location or during heavy phone use.
  • Keep a USB-C to Lightning cable available if anyone in the household still uses an earlier iPhone.

Bottom line for choosing a MacBook charger

A USB-C MacBook power adapter is a practical iPhone charger when paired with the correct cable. Use USB-C to USB-C for iPhone 15 and later, USB-C to Lightning for earlier models, and check USB Power Delivery and wattage when fast charging matters. Higher wattage improves available capacity but does not erase model-specific limits or environmental factors. If charging is slow, first eliminate shared power, demanding use, temperature problems and cable or adapter requirements before replacing equipment.
