That is expected behavior, not necessarily a fault. Use the touchscreen in tablet posture; on the models documented here, returning the screen to notebook posture restores keyboard input. The exact behavior depends on your Lenovo model.
Why does my Lenovo keyboard stop working in tablet mode?
On the Lenovo 13w 2-in-1 Gen 3, the keyboard and pointing device are disabled automatically in stand and tablet modes. Lenovo’s user guide states: “The keyboard and the pointing device are automatically disabled in the stand mode and tablet mode.” It directs users to the touchscreen in tablet posture and says keyboard input returns when the device is changed to notebook mode. Lenovo documents the same general behavior for the Yoga 9i 2-in-1, where the keyboard and pointing device are disabled in stand, tent, and tablet modes and re-enabled in notebook mode.

These instructions describe particular convertible models, not every Lenovo laptop. Check the user guide for your exact model before treating its behavior as the same.

When rotating the 13w 2-in-1 Gen 3 display, Lenovo warns not to force the display or press hard on its upper corners. Follow your own model’s instructions for changing posture.

Can I keep using the built-in keyboard while the Lenovo is folded?
The cited guides do not describe a setting that overrides automatic posture-based disabling of the built-in keyboard. Lenovo Vantage keyboard customization is not documented as a way to keep that keyboard active in tablet posture.
If your model supports it, use touchscreen input or a compatible pen for writing and drawing. Lenovo identifies an integrated rechargeable pen on selected 300w Yoga Gen 4 and 500w Yoga Gen 4 configurations; check the exact model and configuration for compatibility. The pen is an alternative input method, not a fix that re-enables the built-in keyboard.

Is Windows Tablet Mode the same as tablet posture?
No. Tablet posture is the physical position of a convertible’s display and may trigger the hardware behavior described above. Windows 10 Tablet Mode is a separate operating-system interface setting. Changing that Windows setting is not a universal way to re-enable a keyboard disabled because the device is folded.

What should I check if the keyboard stays unavailable?
- Return the screen to notebook posture. On models documented by Lenovo, keyboard input should return in that posture.
- Confirm your exact model’s behavior. Consult its user guide rather than assuming every Lenovo convertible uses identical posture detection.
- Separate a Windows setting from a hardware posture change. Lenovo’s Tablet Mode directions are specifically for Windows 10 supported devices.
- If input still does not work in notebook posture, use the official support and troubleshooting instructions for your model. Tablet-mode behavior alone does not establish a hardware fault, and a model-independent repair sequence is not documented here.
Where are Lenovo keyboard settings in Vantage?
For the Lenovo 13w 2-in-1 Gen 3, the user guide gives this path for keyboard customization: Lenovo Vantage > Device > Input & Accessories. The guide does not say these settings can override the automatic disabling of the built-in keyboard in tablet posture.
Lenovo’s model-specific guides provide more detail: 13w 2-in-1 Gen 3 convertible modes and settings, Yoga 9i 2-in-1 modes, and 100w, 300w Yoga, and 500w Yoga Gen 4 guide.
