Sometimes—but pairing a game controller usually lets you navigate selectable items, not move a free-position mouse cursor. A controller touchpad can provide pointer input on supported devices, and an app may add stick-controlled cursor movement. For a straightforward pointer on an Android phone or tablet, Google documents connecting a USB or Bluetooth mouse.
Gamepad navigation is not the same as a mouse
With a standard gamepad, Android TV uses the D-pad to move focus between on-screen items and the A button to select the focused item. Home and Back may also be available. Android’s controller settings let you connect a supported controller and, where available, reassign buttons or joysticks. The documented settings do not include a general system-wide switch that turns an ordinary analog stick into a mouse. Google’s Android controller setup instructions cover connection and reassignment.

Use a controller with an integrated touchpad
Android developer documentation says that touching an integrated game-controller touchpad can generate an on-screen mouse pointer. Whether this works depends on the controller and the device or software supporting that input; it is not a universal feature of gamepads. Android’s controller-features documentation describes this touchpad behavior.

Try an app that maps a stick to a cursor
The Google Play listing for Gamepad Mouse advertises gamepad-stick cursor movement and button mapping, including use with Android TV and tablets. Its description says Accessibility Service access is needed to show the cursor, perform clicks, and invoke system actions such as Back and Home. The listing is the app publisher’s claim, not a guarantee that it will work with every controller, device, Android version, or app.
Before relying on this route, check the current listing for compatibility and permissions. Its troubleshooting guidance specifies X-input mode; that requirement comes from the app listing and may not apply to other apps. Also check how to disable or exit the app’s controls if you want to return to ordinary gamepad use.

Connect a mouse to a phone or tablet
For Android phones and tablets, Google documents connecting a Bluetooth or USB mouse as a direct pointer option. A wired mouse may require an adapter that fits the device’s port. Follow the device maker’s instructions if connection steps or settings differ. Google’s Android accessibility guidance covers external input devices and notes that feature names and navigation can vary by market and device.

What to try on each device
Android TV
- Open the TV’s Remote and accessories settings and pair the controller if the TV supports it. The exact path can vary by model.
- Try the D-pad and A button to move focus and select items. Do not expect a cursor simply because the controller has an analog stick.
- If you need pointer control, check whether the controller has a supported touchpad, or check an app’s current compatibility with your TV and Android version before installing it.
Android phone or tablet
- To connect a controller, use a compatible cable or pair it over Bluetooth. On supported devices, controller options are available under Connected devices; labels vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- To get a visible pointer, connect a USB or Bluetooth mouse. Check whether a wired connection needs an adapter.
- If you want to use a gamepad stick instead, verify the app’s permissions, controller mode, and device compatibility before depending on it.
