That is separate from Amazon Prime: the setup instructions require an account, but do not say you need a Prime membership.
Does Fire TV Stick setup require an Amazon account?
Yes. Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup instructions list an Amazon account and an internet connection among the basic requirements. During setup, you connect the Stick to Wi-Fi and sign in or sign up. Amazon offers an on-screen QR code or web address and activation code to complete account sign-in.

Amazon’s broader Fire TV setup guide gives the same sequence: connect the device, choose a language, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to an Amazon account or create one, and follow the remaining prompts. An About Amazon overview updated January 10, 2025 likewise says users will be asked to connect to Wi-Fi and create or sign in to an account.

Amazon’s setup guidance calls for an Amazon account; it does not state that Prime membership is required to set up the Stick. An account and a paid membership are different things. Individual streaming apps or services may charge for access to particular content, but the setup sources do not establish which subscriptions are needed for specific shows or services.

Will a deregistered Fire TV Stick work without an account?
Amazon Staff wrote in a September 20, 2022 response that “The Fire TV Stick will only work when registered to an Amazon account.” The response says deregistering removes content associated with the account and allows the device to be registered to another Amazon account. It does not describe deregistration as an account-free mode. See the Amazon Digital and Device Forum response.
So, if a Stick is deregistered, the documented next step is to register it to an account. The available guidance does not establish factory reset or deregistration as a supported way to bypass account registration.

What if your setup screen looks different?
Amazon’s published setup pages establish the ordinary setup flow, but do not document every model, software version, or regional variation. If your device shows a different prompt, check the current Amazon support instructions for your specific model rather than assuming that the difference means account-free operation is supported.
