Yes—connect a compatible TV signal source to the DVD recorder for recording, then connect the recorder’s output to a TV input to watch recordings. Whether recording works depends on the signal source and the recorder’s tuner or recording inputs. A cable from the recorder’s HDMI output to the TV’s HDMI input is for playback; it does not send a smart-TV app or other TV picture back into the recorder.
First, identify what you want to record
The right connection depends on where the program comes from: an antenna, a cable feed, a cable or satellite box, or an app built into the TV. A DVD recorder must have a tuner or recording input compatible with that source. Check the exact recorder model’s manual before connecting or buying cables; tuner support and available ports vary.

- Antenna or cable feed: Connect it to the recorder’s supported antenna/cable input only if the recorder supports that signal. Route the signal onward as the recorder’s manual directs. Sony’s connection guidance describes antenna/cable paths but makes the setup dependent on the equipment involved: Sony’s DVD recorder connection guide.
- Cable or satellite set-top box: Check that the box has an output the recorder can record and that it matches a recording input on the recorder. Having HDMI on both devices does not establish that the recorder can record the box’s HDMI output.
- Smart-TV app: The manufacturer instructions cited here do not document a supported way to record a TV’s built-in app to a DVD recorder. Do not assume the TV’s HDMI inputs or app picture can be sent to the recorder. Check the manuals and any service restrictions for your specific equipment.
Record from a set-top box only when the connections match
Panasonic’s illustrated set-top-box setup connects the box’s red, white, and yellow analog audio/video outputs to the recorder’s line input. Panasonic states that an HDMI-only set-top box cannot connect to the recorder covered by that article. That limitation applies to the described equipment, not automatically to every DVD recorder; verify the inputs on your model and the outputs on your box. See Panasonic’s set-top-box recording instructions.

In Panasonic’s example, the analog path may record at lower quality than the HD picture shown on screen, and unattended recordings of different channels are not possible. These are limitations of the described setup; check your own devices’ manuals for their capabilities and recording behavior.

Connect the recorder to the TV for playback
For playback, connect an output on the recorder to a compatible AV input on the TV. With HDMI, connect the recorder’s HDMI output to the TV’s HDMI input. LG’s recorder manual gives this direction and tells users to select HDMI as the TV source: LG RC297H-M / RC797T manual. Protected content and device compatibility can impose restrictions; do not attempt to bypass copy protection.
HDMI carries audio and video. Sony’s guidance also describes component and composite connections for playback; the guide characterizes HDMI as HD and component and composite as SD for its covered setup. The result depends on the recorder, TV, source, and format. Check which outputs and inputs your own models actually have.

For composite playback, Sony specifically directs users to connect the recorder to the TV’s AV input and then select that input. The RF/coaxial pass-through path alone is not the playback connection for a recorded DVD in Sony’s illustrated setup. See Sony’s composite connection instructions and Sony’s HDMI connection instructions.

- Turn on the recorder and connect its output to the matching TV input—for example, recorder HDMI OUT to TV HDMI IN.
- Use the TV remote’s Input or Source control and select the port you used, such as HDMI 1 or AV. The label varies by TV.
- Start playback on the recorder. If there is no picture or sound, check that both ends of the cable are firmly connected and that the TV is set to the correct input.
Available connections and on-screen labels vary by model. LG’s TV connections manual also stresses that external-device connections are model-specific: LG TV Connections Manual.

The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.
Check compatibility before choosing cables or discs
Use the device labels and manuals to check the whole signal path, not just the TV. Match the source output to a recorder recording input; then match a recorder output to a TV input. For antenna or cable recording, verify tuner support for the actual signal. If recording to a disc, confirm which recordable DVD formats the recorder supports.
- Does the recorder have a tuner or recording input that supports the intended source?
- Do the set-top box’s outputs match the recorder’s recording inputs?
- Does the recorder have an output compatible with an available TV input?
- What picture quality does the selected connection support on these devices?
- Can the setup change channels or make timed recordings as needed?
Buy an HDMI cable for recorder-to-TV playback only when both devices have HDMI ports. An HDMI cable does not make a smart-TV app recordable. Follow the recorder manual for supported disc formats and media.
