Can You Use a Chromebook Without Internet?

Chromebooks can do useful work offline, but many files and services need advance setup. Here’s what to sync, save, and test before you disconnect.

Yes. You can use a Chromebook offline for tasks such as editing files saved for offline use, reading synced Gmail, viewing local downloads, and using some offline-capable apps. But you need to prepare many of these things while connected: a Chromebook does not make ordinary websites or cloud services available without internet.

What works offline on a Chromebook?

Offline access depends on the app and the content, not just the Chromebook. Google lists Gmail, Keep, Docs, Sheets, Slides, some media, and offline-capable apps among the possibilities. Pages or services that need live network data will not work simply because you are using a Chromebook. See Google Chromebook Help’s offline guide.

  • Local files: Files already stored on the Chromebook can be opened with a compatible app.
  • Google Drive files: Files you have made available offline can be opened and edited; changes sync after you reconnect.
  • Gmail: You can read and work with the messages included in its offline sync.
  • Other apps and media: Support varies by app. Check the specific app rather than assuming it works offline.

Prepare Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides

Google’s setup instructions require an internet connection during preparation. Use Chrome or Edge, not a private browsing window, and make sure the Chromebook has enough free storage. Enable Drive offline and the Docs Offline extension, then mark the specific files you need as available offline. Google’s instructions are at Work on Google Docs, Sheets and Slides offline and Use Google Drive files offline on your Chromebook.

  1. While online, open Google Drive in Chrome and enable offline access in Drive settings.
  2. Install or enable the Docs Offline extension if prompted.
  3. For each important file, choose the option to make it available offline. Wait until Drive indicates it is ready before disconnecting.
  4. Reconnect later so edits made offline can sync.

Drive offline does not cover everything: Google lists Maps and Forms as unsupported for Drive offline, and some apps may not work without a connection.

Set up Gmail offline

Gmail offline must be enabled ahead of time in Chrome, and you choose how much message history to sync. It is configured per account, so do not assume another signed-in account has the same offline mail available. In a normal Chrome window, open Gmail while online and use its offline settings to enable sync and select the message period. Google explains the setup and limits in Set up & use Gmail offline.

When offline, you can read, search, and reply to synced messages. Mail you send without a connection stays in the Outbox and is sent after you reconnect. Gmail offline does not work in Incognito, and its available data is limited by browser storage.

Keep files and other essentials on the device

The simplest fallback is to save what you need locally before leaving coverage. Chromebook downloads go to the Downloads folder by default. Download documents, media, or other materials in advance, and open essential files once while online to confirm they are usable in the app you plan to use. Google describes downloads in Open, save, or delete files on your Chromebook.

A USB drive or other external storage can carry files if the Chromebook recognizes it and the file type is supported. Compatibility varies, so connect and test the device before relying on it. External storage helps with files already saved to it; it does not provide internet access or fetch cloud-only content. See File types & external devices that work on Chromebooks.

What may not work as expected?

  • Unsaved websites: A page you did not save for offline use, or a service that needs live data, may be unavailable.
  • YouTube Music: Google says offline music playback is not supported by YouTube Music for Chromebook. Details are in Google’s Chromebook offline guide.
  • Office-format files: Google says Microsoft 365 and Office files cannot be opened in those editors while offline; in some cases, a limited basic editor may be available. Test the actual file and application you intend to use before travel. See Open & edit Office files on your Chromebook.
  • Guest or private sessions: Some offline features require a regular signed-in session. Gmail offline, for example, is unavailable in Incognito.

Check storage and device restrictions before you leave

Offline files and synced data need local space. Low storage can interfere with downloads or saved settings, and ChromeOS may automatically delete downloaded files to reclaim space. Check free space and keep essential files in a location you can access. Google’s guidance is Free up space on your Chromebook.

School- or work-managed Chromebooks may have administrator policies that affect Gmail setup or Android app access. Android app availability also varies by Chromebook. If the device is managed, confirm the relevant apps and offline settings while online; Google covers app restrictions in Connect & entertain with apps on Chromebook and offline-use caveats in Use your Chromebook offline.
