Can You Use 10-Bit Video Files in an OBS YouTube Playlist Stream?

OBS can play 10-bit files, but the stream’s bit depth and HDR depend on your output encoder and settings—not just the source video.

Yes—OBS can play a 10-bit video file as a media source in a playlist. But that does not mean the stream YouTube receives will be 10-bit or HDR: playback input and encoded output are separate. For HDR on YouTube, configure OBS and a supported hardware encoder to meet YouTube’s HEVC and color-format requirements.

What “10-bit support” means in OBS

OBS’s high-precision color guidance says 10-bit formats can be used for video playback, streaming, and recording. That establishes general playback support, not compatibility with every codec, container, file encoding, or computer. OBS’s reviewed guidance does not list every combination, so test the specific file in your setup.

A file’s bit depth describes its video data; it does not dictate the properties of the stream OBS encodes. A 10-bit file may play while OBS sends an 8-bit SDR output. OBS’s source strings state that H.264 output supports only 8-bit color and Rec. 709. If you want an HDR live stream, you must configure the output path for HDR rather than assume the source file’s bit depth will pass through unchanged.

Set up a 10-bit file in an OBS playlist

  1. Add the file as a media source: In your scene, add a Media Source and select the 10-bit video file. For a playlist, add and configure the media sources you intend to play in sequence. Confirm each file plays in OBS; the general support statement does not guarantee every particular codec and container will work.
  2. Decide whether the stream should be SDR or HDR: If SDR is acceptable, the file can be used as playback input without making the output HDR. Check OBS’s output encoder and color settings; do not infer stream bit depth or dynamic range from the input file.
  3. For HDR, check the encoder first: YouTube’s HDR live-stream guidance requires HEVC and 10-bit video. YouTube states: “At this time, HDR streaming to YouTube is only supported with the H.265 (HEVC) video codec.” Your encoder hardware must support the formats you select.
  4. Use YouTube’s documented OBS HDR configuration: YouTube specifies OBS 30.1 or later, a hardware HEVC encoder, the Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. The selected primaries must be BT.2020, and the transfer characteristics should match the source; YouTube recommends HLG. Verify the current official setup instructions for the ingest protocol you choose.
  5. Match ingest settings to the chosen path: YouTube documents RTMPS and HLS configuration paths. HLS has additional requirements, including transport-stream segments and a rolling playlist. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for the selected protocol and its stream-key and playlist requirements; do not assume the settings for one path apply to the other.
  6. Check the actual stream: Confirm OBS is using the intended encoder, profile, color format, and color characteristics, and verify the live stream is recognized and displayed as HDR by YouTube. A “10-bit” filename, container, or source setting alone is not proof that the encoded stream is HDR.

Check the whole HDR chain

  • Source file: Confirm the file’s actual encoding and HDR metadata. The filename or container label alone cannot establish that it is HDR.
  • OBS output: Confirm the selected encoder can produce the required HEVC Main 10 output and that P010 and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG are configured consistently.
  • Hardware: YouTube cautions that the encoder must support the selected formats. A hardware HEVC option in OBS is not sufficient if the underlying encoder does not support the required profile and color format.
  • Ingest protocol: Apply the YouTube requirements for the RTMPS or HLS path you are using. For HLS, account for its segment and rolling-playlist requirements.
  • External HDR capture, if used: OBS says the capture device must support a 10-bit format such as P010. The cited OBS capture guidance says external HDR capture is supported on Windows at this time. This capture limitation concerns an external-device workflow, not simply playing a local file.

Common problems and fixes

  • The file will not play: The general 10-bit playback guidance does not guarantee support for every codec, container, or encoding. Test the file as a media source in OBS and check whether that specific playback path supports it.
  • The video plays, but YouTube does not show HDR: Playback does not determine output. Check that OBS is not sending H.264, and verify the hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 format, BT.2020 primaries, and matching Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG settings.
  • The required encoder or profile is unavailable: The encoder may not support the format, profile, or color mode selected. Check the hardware capabilities and use a supported encoder and YouTube-documented configuration; a 10-bit input cannot make an incompatible output encoder produce HDR.
  • External capture is not 10-bit: Check that the capture device supports a 10-bit format such as P010 and that the operating system is supported for the OBS external HDR capture path. The cited OBS guidance currently specifies Windows for that workflow.
  • HLS ingest does not work as expected: Check YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements, including transport-stream segments and a rolling playlist, rather than applying RTMPS assumptions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube playlist that stays live, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only, and its input-file playback should not be treated as a guarantee of HDR output. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
