On the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 (CM5), swapping in a higher-capacity RAM chip is not a practical upgrade: Raspberry Pi engineers say the module’s memory capacity is locked to its original size. That does not mean every RAM-chip repair is impossible. Replacing a failed chip with an identical part may work, but it requires specialist skill and can still carry reliability risks.
Can you upgrade RAM on a Raspberry Pi?
The clearest evidence concerns the CM5, so it should not be generalized to every Raspberry Pi model. In a June 2026 Raspberry Pi forum discussion, a technician described attempting to change a CM5 from 2GB to 4GB. The board continued to report 2GB after the work.

The poster said they installed a 4GB chip, then tried one removed from a known-good 4GB CM5. They also changed a resistor associated with memory-size signaling, reflashed the board, and swapped SPI flash chips. These were steps in one forum report, not an independently replicated test. Raspberry Pi engineer and forum moderator Phil Elwell summarized the capacity-conversion issue: “I don’t see RAM being swapped between authorised devices of different sizes as a likely use case, but don’t waste your time trying – it won’t work.” Read the CM5 RAM upgrade discussion on Raspberry Pi Forums.

Raspberry Pi engineers said the CM5’s RAM capacity is locked to the size specified for the original module. The forum discussion therefore does not support treating a larger chip, a resistor change, firmware reflashing, or a donor chip as a way to turn a lower-capacity CM5 into a higher-capacity one.

Elwell said Raspberry Pi buys RAM in large quantities on competitive terms, while cheaper third-party parts may be available only in small volumes and may not have been tested by Raspberry Pi. He explained that converting a lower-capacity module with such a chip could create reliability problems and additional support costs. The lock is intended to remove the commercial incentive for that conversion.
Is RAM replacement possible for repair?
A like-for-like repair is different from a capacity upgrade. Raspberry Pi engineer timg236 said: “Swapping an identical (same part-code) chip for repair would work if you are sufficiently skilled.” This is a possibility, not a guarantee that every replacement will work.

- Upgraded processor BCM2712, quad-core Cortex-A76 64-bit SoC, more powerful performance
- Faster eMMC Flash storage, up to 200 Mbps data rate
- Adopts B to B connectors, most compatible with Compute Module 4
- Onboard Gigabit Ethernet PHY supporting IEEE1588, suitable for network applications
- Onboard PCIe Gen 2 x1 interface, allows connecting more useful modules
The engineers noted that RAM parts have programmed attributes—including density, organization, and tuning or timing information—that help the platform support a range of SDRAM suppliers. Those attributes can complicate even a same-capacity replacement. Phil Elwell also cautioned that changing RAM can cause random crashes, especially under heavy load. The forum’s distinction is practical: a skilled technician may be able to replace a failed chip with the same part code, but changing the module’s capacity is not a supported workaround.

What to do if you need more memory
- Choose the required capacity when buying. For a CM5, select a factory configuration with enough RAM for the workload. This is the practical route supported by the forum discussion; it does not establish that aftermarket upgrade kits work.
- If the RAM has failed, seek board-level repair expertise. Ask whether the technician can source and fit the identical part code, and discuss the risk of instability. A same-size replacement is not the same as a capacity upgrade.
- Do not treat firmware or resistor experiments as a reliable upgrade method. In the reported case, those changes did not alter the system’s reported 2GB capacity.
The available discussion does not provide comparative prices for repair versus buying a correctly configured module, or a failure rate for RAM-chip replacements. It also does not establish the same capacity-lock behavior for every Raspberry Pi board.
