Yes—if the laptop’s motherboard and essential components still work. A 3D-printed mount or enclosure can give working laptop hardware a desktop-style home, but it cannot fix a failed motherboard, and a case designed for one model is unlikely to fit another. Two practical routes are to design a custom mount around your own hardware or use a model-specific kit such as Slimbook’s SlimBOX.
What “broken laptop” can—and cannot—mean
A broken hinge, damaged screen, unusable keyboard, or cracked outer shell may leave a working computer inside. In that situation, you can remove or bypass the damaged parts and build a desktop-style setup around the surviving hardware. If the motherboard or another essential component has failed, printing a case will not make the laptop usable as a PC.

Start by checking that the computer boots and that the components you intend to keep work. The documented custom build by Saurabh Sood began with working internals despite a broken hinge and unusable keyboard; it is not evidence that every damaged laptop can be converted. Sood’s project retained the LCD and used a stand, while other builds may omit the screen, keyboard, or battery depending on the hardware and intended setup.
Two routes: custom design or model-specific case
| Route | Compatibility | Work involved | Format and services |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom mount, based on Sood’s build | Designed around the donor laptop’s measured motherboard and LCD mounting points. | Measure the hardware, make a CAD design, split large parts to suit the printer, and assemble the sections. | Can retain the screen; the documented build reused the laptop’s bottom cover and a printed tablet holder as a stand. Self-printing and assembly are required. |
| Slimbook SlimBOX | Initially described for Slimbook ProX models with a single-fan cooler; dual-fan versions are excluded. | Check compatibility, print the design, secure the port plate, and fasten the board and heatsink. | Board-in-enclosure design with port access. Slimbook offers downloadable FreeCAD models and a printed case for purchase. |
The SlimBOX details are specific to Slimbook’s stated compatibility; they do not establish fit for other ProX configurations or other laptop brands. See Slimbook’s SlimBOX page for its compatibility information and available files or case.

- 【More Colors for More Projects】 Multiple compact 250g mini spools provide practical amounts of different colors for small prints, multicolor models, accent parts, and test prints. Explore more colors without filling your shelf with full 1kg spools or leaving large amounts of rarely used colors behind
- 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
- 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
- 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
What to plan before designing or printing
Measure the board and mounting points
Do not assume that a generic mini-PC case will accept a laptop motherboard. Record the positions of screw holes, board edges, ports, and any components that need clearance. In Sood’s project, the mounting plate was designed in FreeCAD from measured motherboard and LCD screw-hole distances.
Make room for ports and cooling
Decide which connections must remain accessible, then position openings to match the board’s actual ports. The SlimBOX guide calls for a port plate and fastening both the board and heatsink, underscoring that the enclosure must accommodate the cooling hardware rather than simply hold the board. A separate, ongoing Hackaday.io maker log about a salvaged Ryzen laptop motherboard documents additional engineering work, including custom cooling and adapting a case power button; its listed enclosure is plywood, not a completed 3D-printed design. The project log is useful as an illustration of those extra considerations, not as a ready-to-follow printed-case tutorial.

Plan how the PC will turn on
Some laptop power buttons are part of the keyboard or another assembly you plan to remove. Check how your particular board is powered on before you close up a case; a conversion may require adapting a button or retaining part of the original hardware. The Hackaday.io project documents a case power-button adaptation, but does not establish a universal method for other boards.

A build can retain the laptop’s screen as a stand-supported all-in-one or house only the board in a separate enclosure and connect desktop peripherals. The right choice depends on which components still work and whether you want to keep the original display and keyboard. Sood’s build retained the LCD, reused the bottom cover as a back, and used a printed tablet holder for support.

A practical sequence for a custom conversion
- Check the donor. Confirm that the motherboard and the parts you plan to reuse work before spending time on an enclosure.
- Identify the hardware. Record the laptop model, motherboard layout, cooler configuration, port positions, mounting holes, and any screen or power-button connections you intend to retain.
- Choose the build format. Decide whether the display stays attached or the board becomes a separate desktop-style unit.
- Design around measured dimensions. Create a mount in CAD, placing screw points, port access, cooling clearance, and power-button access where the hardware requires them. Sood used FreeCAD.
- Fit the design to your printer. If the plate is too large for the print area, divide it into printable sections and plan how they will be joined. Sood used four sections, screws, and printed braces.
- Assemble and check access. Secure the board and cooling hardware, verify that ports remain reachable, and make sure the chosen power-on method works. Sood reused the laptop’s bottom cover as a back for his build.
These are design considerations drawn from documented projects, not a universal laptop disassembly procedure. Connector locations, fasteners, cooling arrangements, and power controls vary by model.

A swollen lithium-ion battery indicates damage and may present a fire hazard. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises contacting the manufacturer, retailer, or local hazardous-waste program for instructions. Do not casually use or dismantle a swollen battery, and do not put lithium-ion batteries in household trash or recycling. Disposal routes vary by location; see the EPA’s lithium-ion battery guidance for more information.
