1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChatGPT can be useful for explanations, brainstorming and organizing questions, but it is not an authority. It can give incorrect answers confidently, reflect bias, or reinforce a user’s framing. Use it as a starting point, check important claims against current authoritative sources, and consult a qualified professional for consequential medical, legal, financial or safety decisions.
What does it mean to trust ChatGPT’s advice?
Trust should depend on what you are asking and what could happen if the answer is wrong. For a low-stakes task—such as generating ideas or making a list of questions—ChatGPT can be a convenient aid. For a decision that depends on current facts, personal circumstances or professional judgment, its response should not be the final word.

OpenAI’s Help Center puts the central reliability issue plainly: “Confidence isn’t reliability: The model may express high confidence even in incorrect answers.” Read OpenAI’s guidance on whether ChatGPT tells the truth. Fluency and certainty are features of how an answer is presented, not evidence that it is accurate.

Bias is a possible pattern in responses, not proof that every answer is biased or that all outputs follow one simple political direction. It can involve demographic stereotypes, but it can also appear in what the chatbot emphasizes, which assumptions it accepts, or how it frames a disputed question.

Agreement with the user’s framing
OpenAI says ChatGPT may agree with a user’s strong opinion on a political issue and reinforce that belief. If a question is framed to favor one conclusion, the answer may not adequately challenge the premise. OpenAI explains its guidance on ChatGPT bias.
Bias has several possible sources
Generated responses can be influenced by training data, evaluation choices, prompt wording and the conversational context. OpenAI’s fairness work acknowledges limitations, and its political-bias evaluation describes a limited slice of everyday use rather than a complete account of how people encounter the model. NIST’s broader guidance warns that AI can increase the speed and scale of harmful biases. These concerns make fairness and mitigation ongoing work, not a problem that can be declared solved by a single test.

How should you check an answer before acting on it?
- Ask what is known and what is assumed. Request that ChatGPT separate factual claims from assumptions and identify uncertainty. This can make gaps easier to spot, but it does not establish that the answer is correct.
- Ask for a serious alternative. If the response agrees with your premise, request the strongest reasonable counterargument or another interpretation. Compare the reasoning rather than treating agreement as confirmation.
- Request sources for factual claims. If web search or deep research is enabled, these features can help surface more current sources. Open the cited pages yourself and check that they support the specific claim and are up to date. A citation is a lead to inspect, not proof on its own. OpenAI’s truthfulness guidance covers source access and verification.
- Use sources suited to the question. For consequential decisions, prefer relevant primary sources and guidance from appropriately qualified professionals over an unsupported chatbot answer.
- Limit personal details. Avoid sharing sensitive information that is not necessary to get help with your question.
These steps are practical precautions, not a validated method for guaranteeing an accurate response.
When should you go directly to a professional or primary source?
Do not make a consequential health, legal, financial or safety decision solely on chatbot advice. The more the answer depends on your individual circumstances, a current rule or an expert assessment, the more important it is to verify it directly. ChatGPT can help you prepare questions or understand terminology, but that role is different from receiving a reliable assessment for your situation.
| Situation | Reasonable role for ChatGPT | What to rely on before acting |
|---|---|---|
| Low-stakes brainstorming or organizing questions | Generate options or help structure your thinking | Your judgment; verify factual details if they matter |
| A claim that may have changed or needs evidence | Help identify questions and possible sources | Open current, authoritative sources and confirm they support the claim |
| Medical, legal, financial or safety decision | Help clarify terms or prepare questions | An appropriately qualified professional and relevant authoritative sources |
What do reliability and advice-taking studies tell us?
A 2023 paper, “In ChatGPT We Trust? Measuring and Characterizing the Reliability of ChatGPT,” evaluated 5,695 questions across ten datasets and eight domains. Its abstract notes that system roles could affect reliability. That is a result from a particular question-answering evaluation—not a general accuracy rate, a guarantee about current ChatGPT models, or a test of advice for your personal circumstances. Read the 2023 reliability paper.
A separate 2023 experiment, “Taking Advice from ChatGPT,” examined how participants weighed advice. In that study’s setup, the advisor’s identity (AI chatbot versus human expert), a written justification and whether the advice was correct did not significantly affect how participants weighted advice. This finding concerns participants’ responses in an experiment; it does not establish whether chatbot advice is safe or correct in a real-world decision. Read the advice-taking study.
More broadly, trustworthy AI involves properties such as validity, reliability and fairness; no single confident answer establishes those qualities. NIST’s overview of trustworthy and responsible AI describes these characteristics.
