A convincing image is generated from your photo and the retailer’s product imagery; it does not prove a garment’s measurements, drape, stretch, comfort, or size. What AI virtual try-on can—and cannot—tell you
Virtual try-on (VTO) creates an image of a person wearing a selected item. It can help you imagine broad appearance, styling, or color, but the result is not a fitting-room test or a sizing measurement. Google says of its Shopping feature: “The generated image can help you see how an item might look, but it does not determine or guarantee the actual fit of the garment.” That statement describes Google’s own tool, not every VTO service. Generated images may contain errors in body shape, personal features, or garment details. ASOS likewise cautions that its preview may not accurately represent body shape, proportions, size, color, or fit. Realistic-looking output should not be mistaken for evidence that the pictured garment will sit or feel the same way on you.

For a purchase decision, consult the garment’s size chart, customer reviews, fit notes, and product details. These can provide information the generated image does not establish, such as stated measurements or how other buyers describe the fit. Google and ASOS both direct shoppers to those conventional product resources. The guidance cited here does not establish that VTO reliably improves sizing or reduces returns.

Why the image can be misleading
The output depends partly on the shopper’s input photo and the merchant’s product image. Google says its own feature’s quality can be affected by both. A poor photo or an unclear image of the garment can therefore undermine the preview before any question of fit arises. Google Shopping guidance Google Merchant Center guidance
Photo tips for Google’s feature
For Google’s tool—not as universal requirements for every service—the company recommends a well-lit photo with a clean background, fitted clothing, and either a full-body image or a selfie; hands should be visible. It cautions that baggy clothing may distort the result. Merchant imagery should show the whole garment clearly without obstructions. These tips may help the visualization, but cannot turn it into a fit guarantee.

Check privacy before uploading a photo
Privacy practices are provider-specific. Read the notice attached to the exact retailer, app, and feature you plan to use. Look for answers to these questions before sharing an image:
- Is the photo uploaded to a server, processed on your device, or both?
- Which third-party providers receive or process the photo?
- Does the service derive biometric data or facial geometry?
- Are the original or generated images used to train or evaluate models?
- How long are each of those images kept, and where?
- Can you delete them, and how do you request deletion?
- Is consent explicit, and are age limits or account requirements clear?
What Google and ASOS say about their respective tools
Google says its described Shopping experience does not collect or store biometric data and does not use shopper photos for training. It says photos are used to generate the try-on and describes deletion controls for original and generated images. Google also says trained human reviewers may evaluate image quality, with measures intended to disconnect review data from accounts and help remove identifying or sensitive information. ASOS says its image is processed by a third-party provider and that ASOS itself does not retain the photos or generated images. Its help page distinguishes images held on the user’s device—up to 28 days or until the ASOS app is next opened—from images held by the try-on tool, which it says are kept for 24 hours. The ASOS AI privacy notice says use is optional and requires explicit consent. These stated retention periods and practices apply to the described ASOS tool, not to VTO generally. What one independent study found
A 2024 Concordia University project summary hosted by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada reports privacy and security concerns in its sample of 138 websites and 28 Android apps. The authors reported that 65% of the websites and 18% of the Android apps transmitted user images to servers; 37% of websites used VTO providers that extracted facial geometry; 11% of websites and 25% of providers failed to comply with their own privacy policies; and 22% of websites used misleading data-handling disclaimers. Researchers also counted 1,446 tracking scripts and 931 cookies across the websites analyzed. These are findings from that study’s sample, not estimates of the entire market today or proof about any particular service. The study makes it especially important to assess the service itself rather than infer safe data handling from a retailer’s name or familiarity. Its 2024 findings cannot establish the current practices of an individual tool; the applicable privacy notice and controls remain the relevant place to check.
Availability and eligibility vary
Not every shopper can use every feature, and coverage can change by country, category, app, account, and eligible product. Google’s merchant documentation lists shoes, tops, bottoms, and dresses for its experience, while excluding lingerie, swimwear, and accessories. It also lists market availability and says users must be at least 18 and have specified account settings enabled. Check the current local requirements and whether the exact item is eligible. A practical trust check before using VTO
- Decide what you need to learn. If you want a rough visual impression, a preview may help. If you need confidence about fit or size, use the size chart, reviews, fit notes, and product details instead.
- Check the specific tool’s limits. Confirm the item and category are supported, and read any disclaimer about image accuracy, access, and eligibility.
- Review the photo data path. Check local versus server processing, third parties, biometric inference, model use, retention, deletion, consent, and age conditions.
- Share only if the terms work for you. If the notice is unclear or the retention and processing are unacceptable, skip the upload and shop using product information that does not require your photo.
- Interpret the result narrowly. Treat it as an illustration of possible appearance, not a measurement, size recommendation, or promise of the garment’s real-world look.
