Can You Switch Cloud Streaming Services Without Changing Your YouTube Live URL?

You can usually keep the same YouTube watch-page URL when switching cloud streaming services by retaining the scheduled event and updating its ingest details.

Usually, yes. Keep the same scheduled YouTube live event and change only the cloud service sending its feed. The public watch-page URL belongs to that YouTube event; the replacement service needs the event’s current YouTube ingest URL and stream key. This is the practical approach, not a universal URL-retention guarantee from every cloud provider.

First, clarify which YouTube URL you mean

There are two different URLs involved in a YouTube live stream:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Watch-page URL: the public link viewers open to watch the scheduled or live event. YouTube says a scheduled stream can be shared with viewers. YouTube’s scheduling guidance explains how to share the event.
  • Ingest URL: the destination address the streaming service uses to send the video feed to YouTube. In the encoder or service settings, this is separate from the stream key. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Changing the sending service means updating its connection settings, not replacing the public event link. YouTube describes stream keys as credentials used by an encoder to connect to the stream; keep the key private. YouTube Help compares a stream key to a password and address.

How to switch services while keeping the same watch-page URL

  1. Keep the existing scheduled event in YouTube Studio. Do not create a replacement event if retaining the existing viewer link is the goal. YouTube’s scheduling workflow distinguishes reusing settings from creating a new stream, and explains that scheduled events can be shared. Review the scheduling steps.
  2. Open the event in Live Control Room and retrieve its current connection details. Copy the Stream URL and stream key shown for the event. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the Stream URL as the server destination and the key as a separate credential. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
  3. Enter those details in the replacement service. Find its YouTube destination or encoder settings and enter the current ingest URL and key. Confirm that it supports the ingest protocol your event uses. YouTube documents RTMPS and HLS; HLS is intended for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support, and the encoder must support the selected protocol. YouTube’s protocol guidance explains the available options.
  4. Send a test or rehearsal feed before the scheduled broadcast. Check that Live Control Room receives the feed and shows a preview, then open the existing event’s watch page to confirm it is the intended event. YouTube recommends checking the preview and verifying watch-page accessibility in its live-streaming tips.
  5. Update the key if it has been reset. A reset key will not match the old value saved in the replacement service. Replace it in the service settings before starting the feed; YouTube explicitly instructs creators to update the encoder after resetting a key. Keep the key confidential.

What changes if you create a new YouTube event?

A newly created event is a different YouTube event. Do not assume it inherits the old event’s public watch-page URL. YouTube describes scheduling, sharing, and reusing settings, but does not state that a new event receives the existing event’s watch-page link. If you need a different event, share its new URL with viewers and update any posts, embeds, or reminders that pointed to the old one. YouTube’s scheduling guidance.

  • Credentials: Use the current Stream URL and stream key for that event, not a stale key saved from a previous setup.
  • Protocol: Check that the replacement service and its encoder support the event’s selected RTMPS or HLS ingest method. Protocol details.
  • Preview: Verify the feed appears in Live Control Room and the intended watch page is accessible before going live. YouTube’s testing guidance.
  • Channel eligibility: YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to enable live streaming. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Provider support: YouTube’s guidance covers its own event, key, and ingest settings; it does not guarantee that every cloud provider supports every event or protocol. Check the provider’s current instructions and validate the connection in Live Control Room.
