Yes. You can send a pre-recorded video to a scheduled YouTube Live event through encoder software: create the event in YouTube Studio, connect the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, and play the video through the encoder. If you want YouTube to present an uploaded video as a scheduled viewing event instead, use a Premiere.
Choose Live or Premiere
| Format | How it works | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder-fed Live stream | An encoder sends a video feed to a scheduled YouTube Live event using its stream URL and stream key. Viewers get the live-stream watch page and live chat experience. | You want the video to run as a live event and want the live-stream workflow and tools. |
| Premiere | You schedule an uploaded video for a shared viewing event on YouTube. | The video is an upload and you want a scheduled premiere, rather than an encoder sending a live feed. |
YouTube supports both scheduled live streams and Premieres; the choice is about the experience you want viewers to have, not whether the video was recorded earlier. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and live-streaming overview.
How to stream a pre-recorded video through an encoder
- Confirm the channel is eligible. YouTube says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. Recheck the current Studio setup before a time-sensitive broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance has the current requirements.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Scheduling lets viewers find the upcoming event and opt in to notifications. Check the event’s settings before proceeding. See Manage live stream settings.
- Connect the encoder. In your encoder, enter the stream URL and stream key supplied for the YouTube event. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the connection workflow.
- Load the file in the encoder. Use the encoder’s documented media-file or playback source feature to select and play the recording. File selection, repeat or loop behavior, and playback controls vary by encoder; YouTube’s connection instructions do not define a universal file-playback procedure. Confirm the recording’s audio is included and the picture plays steadily.
- Preview before going live. Check the outgoing preview in Live Control Room and monitor both audio and video before starting the event. YouTube recommends checking the preview and stream quality in its live-streaming tips.
- End the event deliberately. When playback is finished, stop the feed from the encoder and confirm the event has ended in YouTube Studio. If viewers need a replay, check archive settings and keep a local recording as backup.
Clear the rights before you broadcast
Having a video file—or permission to upload it—does not by itself establish that you have every right needed to broadcast it live. YouTube’s live-stream terms require creators to have the necessary rights for worldwide use of the live content, including applicable music rights. YouTube’s livestream terms set out that obligation.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the picture with a placeholder, issue a warning, interrupt the stream temporarily, or terminate it. If you have licensed third-party material, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an interruption when the channel has not been allowlisted. Review Copyright issues with live streams before using music, footage, or other protected material.

- Use material you created or have permission to stream on YouTube Live.

- Do not assume that a track’s availability in another YouTube feature, or a license for an ordinary upload, clears it for a live broadcast.
Plan for the replay and revenue separately
YouTube can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours and recommends keeping a local archive backup. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on YouTube as the sole copy for a long event. See Archive live streams.
Live streams are subject to YouTube’s monetization policies, and advertising or fan-funding features depend on channel eligibility and applicable policies. A pre-recorded live stream is not guaranteed to earn revenue. Check YouTube channel monetization policies for the relevant rules.
