A storefront shutting down does not automatically make every downloaded game unplayable. It may stop new purchases while leaving existing games playable—or allowing purchased games to be downloaded again. But access depends on the platform and the individual game: license checks, DRM, launchers, online servers, and offline support can all affect whether it starts.
What a storefront shutdown can—and cannot—mean
“The store is closed” can describe several different things. A platform may stop selling games without turning off its download service; it may end online multiplayer while single-player modes remain available; or it may keep game files online while a particular title’s launcher or servers stop working. These services can end at different times.

- New purchases: You may no longer be able to buy games or other content through the store.
- Redownloads: You may or may not be able to retrieve a purchase later if you delete it or replace your device.
- Updates and DLC: These can have separate availability from the base game.
- Online features: Multiplayer, cloud saves, and other connected features may stop even if a game still launches.
- Offline play: It works only if the game and platform can start without a network connection or an unavailable authentication service.
So an installed game and a game you can download again are two different cases. Keeping an installed copy may help if redownloads end, but it does not by itself guarantee that the game can authenticate or run.

What happens on platforms with announced shutdowns?
These examples show why a closure needs to be read platform by platform, with attention to dates, regions, and the difference between store access and online play.

Storefront policies are not universal promises about every title. For example, Sony’s US software EULA describes virtual content as licensed and says offline modes are not guaranteed if online services end. That is a statement about the specific US agreement, not a universal rule for every store or a conclusion about the law in every location.
Why an installed game may still fail to start
The files can be on your device while something the game needs is not. A game may check the account or license at launch, require periodic online validation, open through an external launcher, or depend on publisher servers even for solo play. A hardware change or account recovery problem can also matter if access requires signing in again.
Offline capability is title-specific. Steam’s official Offline Mode guidance, for example, excludes games that require an active connection or an external launcher; some games also need an online startup before they can be used offline. The presence of an “offline” setting therefore is not proof that every game in a library will work indefinitely without a connection.
How to prepare a Steam game for Offline Mode
Steam’s steps can help test and prepare a compatible game before you lose internet access. They are not a guarantee that the game will keep working if Steam itself or a third-party service disappears.

- Connect to the internet and start Steam.
- Make sure the game is fully updated.
- Launch it while online and complete any first-run setup or startup requirements.
- Save your Steam account credentials so you can sign in if needed.
- In Steam, choose Go Offline, then check whether the game launches and plays as expected.
If the game requires an active connection or external launcher, Steam says it will not work in Offline Mode. Test the game you care about rather than assuming the result applies to every title in your library.
How to check a specific game
Before relying on a downloaded game, check its current platform and publisher support information and answer these questions:
- Is it installed now, or would you need to download it again?
- Does launch require account sign-in, license validation, or recurring online checks?
- Does it need an external launcher, an always-online connection, or publisher servers—even for solo play?
- Does it offer an offline mode, and have you tested that mode with the device disconnected?
- Has the platform said whether purchased downloads, updates, and DLC will remain available, and does that statement apply to your region?
- Are multiplayer, cloud saves, DLC, and the base game handled by separate services?
Keep a working installation and its updates if you expect to need them offline, and retain account recovery information. These are sensible precautions, not guarantees that a license, launcher, or server will remain available. A disc or cartridge release may offer another way to access an individual title if you have compatible hardware, but it is not a preservation method for the downloaded copy and must be checked game by game.
