Can You Scrape Public Telegram Channels With Python Without Logging In or Using an API ID?

Telegram’s public web preview allows unauthenticated viewing, not a documented bulk-scraping workflow. Telethon’s client API requires your own API ID and hash.

Short answer: You can view public Telegram channel posts on the web without a Telegram account, but Telegram’s official documentation does not establish that web preview as a supported bulk-scraping interface. If you use Telegram’s client API with Python through Telethon, you need your own API ID and API hash.

What you can do without logging in

Telegram says public-channel content can be viewed on the web without a Telegram account. Its channel overview illustrates this with a browser address in the form https://t.me/s/FinancialTimes, and says public post links can be shared and opened in a browser outside the app. This is useful for reading posts without signing in.

That browser view is not the same thing as an officially supported Python scraping API. Telegram’s public documentation does not promise that a script can retrieve a channel’s full history from the preview, that every public channel is available there, or that its HTML structure will remain stable. Browser visibility alone also does not establish blanket permission for automated collection.

Why Telethon needs an API ID and hash

Telethon is a Python library for interacting with Telegram through its client API. Its sign-in guide requires an API ID and API hash for this workflow and explains that developers obtain credentials for their own application. Telegram’s API terms state: “You must obtain your own api_id for your application.” The API hash is secret; do not publish it or include it in code shared publicly.

So a Telethon tutorial cannot accurately promise API access “without an API ID.” The no-login browser preview and credentialed client/API workflow are distinct routes with different capabilities and obligations.

What Telegram’s API terms mean for channel collection

If you use the API route, read Telegram’s API Terms of Service before building a collector. The terms require applications to use their own API ID. They also require apps accessing channel content to support official sponsored messages without interfering with them, and prohibit using or aggregating Telegram data for AI or machine-learning model development, enhancement, or deployment.

These terms matter even when the content is publicly viewable. Public availability should not be treated as an exemption from the rules governing API applications or as permission to collect and repurpose data without limits.

Practical takeaway

  • For occasional reading without an account, use Telegram’s public browser preview and shareable post links.
  • For a Python workflow using Telethon’s client API, register your own application credentials and keep the API hash private.
  • If your requirement is bulk extraction without login or API credentials, the official sources cited here do not document a supported method. Avoid relying on unofficial HTML parsing as if it were stable, complete, or officially endorsed.
