Yes, but with limits: a Redmi tablet does not stop working when updates end, yet it no longer receives the manufacturer’s normal fixes for newly discovered system vulnerabilities. Continuing to use it is a risk decision. Offline reading or other low-risk tasks are different from banking, storing sensitive information, or handling confidential work.
What changes when updates stop?
Android security updates address vulnerabilities in the system. Google says update timing varies by device, and warns that “outdated devices are more vulnerable to security threats” in its Why Android Updates Matter: Features, Security & More article.

That is separate from ordinary app updates. Keeping apps current can reduce some risks, but app updates do not provide missing firmware fixes for the tablet itself. A cautious user can reduce exposure, not restore the protection that manufacturer system patches provide.
How to check your Redmi tablet’s update status
- Identify the exact tablet model and region. Support schedules can differ by model and market; do not assume one Redmi tablet’s end date applies to another.
- Check for an official system update. Xiaomi’s instructions for the REDMI Pad SE 8.7 4G give this path: open Settings, go to Face data & screen lock, tap Security update, then tap Check for update. Menu names may differ on other models or software versions, so consult the instructions for your exact tablet if the path does not match.
- Note the displayed Android security update date. A successful check only tells you whether an update is currently available; it does not by itself establish how long the model will continue to receive support.
- Verify any published support commitment for your model and region. Xiaomi says rollout lists and schedules can change, and availability varies by model and region. Its general policy page cited here concerns smartphones, so it should not be treated as a blanket support promise for Redmi tablets.
One specific commitment is published for the India-market REDMI Pad SE 4G: Xiaomi India’s product FAQ says it comes with 2 major Android updates and 3 years of Google security maintenance. That statement applies to that model and market; it is not a general Redmi tablet policy.

When is continued use a reasonable risk?
The answer depends on what is on the tablet and what you use it to access. The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises replacing an end-of-life device that no longer receives security updates to maintain security standards. That is a security recommendation, not a claim that every unsupported tablet is immediately compromised.
- Lower exposure: occasional offline reading, videos, or other non-sensitive tasks, especially if you avoid connecting to accounts and services that hold valuable information.
- Higher exposure: banking, shopping with saved payment details, primary email, password management, confidential files, or work accounts. For these uses, an unsupported tablet is a poor long-term choice.
- Shared or child use: consider what accounts are signed in and what personal information is accessible, rather than assuming limited use makes the device risk-free.
Reduce risk while planning what to do
If you keep using the tablet for now, these steps can help limit exposure. They do not replace manufacturer security patches.

- Install any official system update that is still available.
- Keep installed apps updated through their official app store.
- Use a screen lock and avoid unexpected links, attachments, and apps installed from outside official sources.
- Limit access to sensitive accounts and confidential work; sign out of accounts you do not need on the device.
- Plan a replacement if you depend on the tablet for sensitive activity or need it to meet security standards.
Is custom firmware a safe fix?
Do not treat a custom operating system as an easy way to restore support. Google warns that deliberately changed operating systems may not work properly and that data could be exposed to corruption and security risks. A custom ROM is specific to an exact device model, and an unsupported or incompatible installation can create additional problems. Without reliable evidence for your precise model, it is not a straightforward recommendation for ordinary users.
What to compare when replacing the tablet
Look beyond the brand name or Android version. Check the support commitment for the exact model and regional variant, how much of that support period would remain when you buy it, and whether the device is currently receiving security patches. Published durations are useful only when they clearly apply to the specific model and market.
