For the cautious option, unplug or switch off an idle USB-C charger—especially before bed or when you leave home. Fire-safety guidance also recommends disconnecting a device once it has finished charging. That advice is prudent, but it does not mean every undamaged USB-C adapter left in an empty wall outlet will cause a fire: the guidance cited here does not quantify that specific risk.
Does “left plugged in” mean the charger or the device?
There are two different situations: a USB-C wall adapter plugged into an outlet with nothing connected, and a phone or other battery-powered device left connected to the adapter. The safety guidance addresses both practices, but does not give a comparative risk measurement or a USB-C-specific estimate for an unloaded adapter.

- Adapter in the wall, no device attached: Electrical Safety First advises not using USB chargers overnight or while away from home; Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service says not to leave an unused phone charger plugged in and turned on.
- Device still connected after charging: Electrical Safety First advises unplugging the device after charging and avoiding prolonged charging. London Fire Brigade likewise advises against leaving items continuously charging after the charge cycle is complete.
These are precautionary household safety recommendations, not a claim that an idle, intact adapter is certain to ignite.

How to reduce charging risks
- Use a suitable charger. Prefer the charger supplied with the device or a genuine replacement from a trusted supplier, and follow the device maker’s instructions. A USB-C connector that fits does not by itself prove the charger is appropriate. Electrical Safety First also recommends buying from a reputable retailer and avoiding substandard or counterfeit products.
- Keep charging equipment uncovered and ventilated. Do not cover a charger or device while it is charging. Keep it away from heat and liquids, and do not charge devices on beds or couches, where soft furnishings can trap heat.
- Switch off or unplug when charging is finished. Disconnect the device after charging; as a cautious habit, turn off or unplug an unused charger, particularly before sleeping or leaving home.
- Stop using equipment that seems faulty. Unplug it if you notice unusual heat, visible damage, sparking, smoke, or an unusual smell. Contact the retailer or manufacturer about a faulty charger rather than continuing to use it.
What the safety guidance does—and does not—establish
Electrical Safety First, London Fire Brigade, and Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service publish precautionary advice to unplug chargers or devices in the circumstances described. Health Canada’s general electrical-product guidance also supports careful use of electrical equipment. These sources do not provide a probability of fire for a modern, undamaged USB-C adapter left plugged into a wall with no device attached, nor do they establish that USB-C adapters have a unique risk. The practical advice is to follow the precautions without treating an unquantified risk as a certainty.
