Yes, on selected Chromebooks. Google lets eligible models install Steam games directly through Steam for Chromebook (Beta). The program is still in beta, so expect bugs, uneven performance, and a game library that varies by device. Eligibility is set by a specific list of Chromebook models, not by hardware specs alone, and Google’s Play Steam for Chromebook (Beta) help page is the authoritative source for that list. The page was current as accessed in October 2026.
Hardware requirements
Google sets minimum hardware for the beta. Meeting these numbers is necessary but not sufficient: the device must also appear on Google’s supported model list.

Which Chromebooks are on the supported list
Google’s current list is organized by manufacturer. Model names are specific, so a sibling model with a similar name may not qualify. Google says the list may change as support expands, so confirm against the live page before buying or installing.

Google’s help page does not state country-specific eligibility, so a listed model is presumed eligible as sold, not guaranteed for every region or configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Check your Chromebook before installing
- Press Ctrl + Search + Esc to confirm the processor and RAM.
- Open Settings → Device → Storage Management to confirm at least 128 GB of storage.
- Find your exact model name or codename (for example, Acer Chromebook 516 GE (CBG516-1H)) and check it against the list above.
- If all three checks pass, continue to installation. If the model is not listed, Steam for Chromebook (Beta) is not available on that device according to Google’s guidance.
Installing Steam for Chromebook
- Open the Launcher.
- Search for Steam installer.
- Select the result listed under Apps.
If the Steam installer does not appear in search, Google says the device does not meet the beta requirements. Do not work around this by installing Steam or Steam Link from the Play Store: Google advises against that route because it can cause performance problems.
What the beta means for your games
Google describes the beta as having limitations, known bugs, and performance issues that affect both gameplay and which titles are available. Those limits are part of the program, not a sign of a misconfigured system.
Rank #2
- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
Google’s help page lists games that performed well in its tests on devices that meet the minimum requirements. Examples include A Short Hike, Among Us, Barotrauma, Celeste, Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, Portal 2, and Vampire Survivors. Google says the list is updated periodically. Treat it as a reference point, not a guarantee: a game missing from the list may still run, and a listed game may behave differently on your model or settings.

Performance adjustments
Google recommends these steps to improve playability. Its help page does not publish benchmark scores or rank supported models by gaming speed, so the guidance below is a starting point rather than a measured comparison.
Rank #3
- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
- Lower the resolution. Google specifically calls this out for displays above 1920 × 1080, and suggests balancing playability against visual quality.
- Close other windows and websites to free memory and processing time.
- Start with medium or low graphics settings in the game, then raise them only if performance holds.
- Handle Vulkan shader processing with care. If you see a Vulkan shader processing message, skipping it can affect gameplay. Allowing shader processing in the background can reduce battery life, so weigh that trade-off if you game unplugged.
Known issues and troubleshooting
Games display at the wrong size or position
Google documents cases where a game appears at the wrong size or in the wrong place on screen. Lowering the resolution is the first thing to try, because the mismatch is commonly tied to the display setting.
Vulkan shader processing notices
The shader messages are expected during the beta. Let the process finish where you can. If you skip it and the game misbehaves, return to the game and allow the processing to complete.

- Processor, memory, and storage at or above the stated minimums (Intel i3 or Ryzen 3, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB storage).
- Screen resolution, and whether you are willing to run games below native resolution. Higher-resolution displays need more adjustment.
- Your target games. Check whether they appear on Google’s tested list. If they do not, check their compatibility separately before relying on them.
- Your tolerance for a beta. Bugs and variable performance are part of the current program.
Confirm the exact configuration and the live support list before purchasing. A listed model name does not verify a specific retailer’s configuration, pricing, or stock.
