Linux can run on some HP Pavilion laptops, but “2018 HP Pavilion” is not specific enough to confirm compatibility or recommend a distribution. Find the laptop’s exact HP product number first, then check its Wi-Fi, graphics, storage, and firmware configuration. A BIOS package that lists Ubuntu for certain Pavilion hardware is not proof that every 2018 Pavilion is certified or that all its components work.
Why the exact Pavilion model matters
HP Pavilion is a product family, not a single hardware configuration. Models sold around the same year can use different wireless adapters, graphics hardware, storage controllers, and firmware. A Linux report or support page for one Pavilion therefore cannot establish compatibility for another.

HP’s support page for the Pavilion Laptop PC 15-eg0000 warns: “If your operating system is not listed then HP may not provide driver support for your product with that operating system.” That page applies to the 15-eg0000, not every Pavilion; use HP’s model-specific support page after identifying your own product.

- Locate the HP product number. Check the label on the laptop’s underside or its original packaging. You can also use HP Support Assistant or the product information shown in the BIOS/UEFI setup. Record the full product number, not just “Pavilion” or a screen size.
- Check the installed components. In Windows, Device Manager can show the adapter and graphics-device names; System Information can help identify the system model. Record the Wi-Fi adapter, graphics devices, and storage-controller details where available.
- Search by that exact model. Use HP’s support page and Canonical’s Ubuntu certified-hardware directory. A matching certification listing is meaningful for the listed configuration; a result for a similar-looking model is not.
What the available Linux evidence does—and does not—show
One 2018 BIOS package listed Ubuntu
HP’s BIOS package SP86738, effective March 26, 2018, names “HP Pavilion 15 Notebook PC” among its supported hardware models and “Ubuntu Linux” among the package’s supported operating systems. This is evidence about that package and its listed hardware, not a certification of every Pavilion made in 2018 or a guarantee that Wi-Fi, graphics, suspend/resume, function keys, or storage will work on your particular laptop.

Certification and support pages are model-specific
Canonical maintains a directory of HP systems certified for Ubuntu, but the listing available for this topic does not identify the unspecified 2018 Pavilion as certified. Search the exact product or model. If it is absent, that does not by itself prove Linux cannot run; it means the directory does not establish certification for it.
Likewise, HP’s driver options vary by product. An operating system missing from one model’s list should not be treated as missing from every Pavilion’s support options—or as proof that community-supported Linux drivers cannot work.

Forum reports are not compatibility tests
An HP Support Community report about a Pavilion 15 cs3075wm describes Ubuntu with some missing drivers, but that is a different machine. A Linux Foundation forum post asks about a 2018 Pavilion and mentions an earlier USB installation attempt without a confirmed outcome. These user accounts are not controlled tests and do not establish a best distribution or a successful configuration for your laptop.

- Wi-Fi: Identify the wireless adapter and check whether the distribution’s current documentation covers it. A system that boots but cannot connect reliably may require additional investigation.
- Graphics: Check the exact integrated and, if present, discrete graphics hardware. Hybrid graphics can make performance, power use, or display behavior dependent on the model and software support.
- Storage: Confirm that the installer can see the internal drive and that the storage controller is supported. Do not change controller or firmware settings based on instructions for a different Pavilion.
- Firmware and boot: Review the exact model’s documentation before changing Secure Boot, boot order, or other firmware options. The available evidence does not verify settings for this unidentified laptop.
- Essential laptop features: If you rely on suspend/resume, function keys, touchpad gestures, or external displays, look for reports or documentation for the same hardware and verify these features before committing to Linux.
Try Linux without risking your existing installation
Once you have the model and component details, choose a currently supported distribution whose documentation covers the hardware. If you want to test an installer, a USB flash drive can serve as installation media; it cannot fix unsupported hardware, firmware problems, or missing drivers.

- Back up files you cannot afford to lose and make sure you have a recovery route for the existing operating system.
- Download the chosen distribution’s installer from its official site and create a bootable USB using its documented method.
- Use the laptop’s model-specific startup instructions to boot from the USB. Avoid changing firmware settings unless you know what the change does and how to restore the original configuration.
- Where the distribution offers a live session, test Wi-Fi, graphics, sound, input devices, and any feature you depend on. A live-session result is useful, but it does not guarantee identical behavior after installation or an update.
- Install only after confirming the target drive and partition choices. If anything essential fails during testing, stop and investigate rather than assuming installation will resolve it.
Can you choose a “HP-friendly” distribution now?
Not from the year and Pavilion name alone. The evidence does not establish a winning distribution for this particular laptop. Once you have the exact product number and component identifiers, compare current kernel and firmware support for its Wi-Fi and graphics, the distribution’s security-update support period, and whether the features you need—especially suspend/resume—work on that hardware.
