Yes, but only if your laptop stays awake, powered and connected with the lid shut. Closing the lid often puts a laptop to sleep, which stops the encoder and interrupts the stream. Windows lets you configure the lid action; on a Mac, ordinary lid closure puts the computer to sleep, so a closed-lid setup depends on Apple’s supported external-display conditions. Test your exact laptop and setup before relying on it for a continuous stream.
What has to keep working
A laptop can send a YouTube stream using encoder software, but that does not establish that every laptop can run continuously for 24 hours. The encoder must remain active, the computer must not sleep, and power and internet access must hold. No universal laptop temperature, endurance or 24/7 reliability specification is established here, so do not assume a model is suitable without testing it.
- Power: Use reliable AC power and check the laptop’s power and sleep settings.
- Network: Confirm that sustained upload capacity is adequate for your selected stream settings.
- Monitoring: Check YouTube’s preview and stream health during a test and while streaming. YouTube recommends testing and continuous monitoring.
- Recovery: Decide how you will detect and respond if the encoder or connection stops.
Configure lid behavior on your laptop
Windows
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- In the Plugged in column, choose an action that does not put the laptop to sleep, if that option is available.
- Apply the setting, connect power, then test with the lid closed while observing the encoder and YouTube preview.
Many Windows laptops sleep when the lid closes. The exact options and their availability can vary by device, so confirm the behavior on your own machine rather than relying only on the selected label.
Mac
Assume that closing a Mac laptop display puts it to sleep unless you are using a supported closed-display configuration. Apple’s guidance for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with M3 specifies an external keyboard and mouse or trackpad, an external display, and power. The cited macOS requirements are Sonoma 14.3 or later for MacBook Air and Sonoma 14.6 or later for MacBook Pro. Other Mac models may have different conditions; check Apple’s instructions for your model and test the complete setup before streaming.

Set up and test the YouTube stream
Check channel eligibility and activation
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance rather than waiting until the planned start.
Choose sustainable encoder settings
Set the stream bitrate with your actual sustained upload capacity in mind, then test it. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s encoder settings table lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. These are YouTube recommendations for those settings, not a promise that your connection will remain stable; other codecs, resolutions and frame rates have different settings.

- Start an unlisted or otherwise suitable test stream using the intended laptop, lid position, power source, network and encoder settings.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream health, and monitor both audio and video during the test.
- Run the setup long enough to catch interruptions or sleep behavior that do not appear immediately. Do not treat a short successful test as proof of 24-hour reliability.
- For an actual continuous broadcast, keep monitoring and have a plan for responding if the encoder or connection fails.
Plan separately for a 24-hour archive
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise that a 24-hour stream will be archived as one complete video. If keeping the full feed matters, arrange a separate local recording or use shorter stream sessions, and verify YouTube’s current behavior before going live.
Choose a setup that fits the content
A laptop-based encoder is relevant when you need to produce a real-time camera or other live program and can keep the computer awake, connected and monitored. For prerecorded video, YouTube’s encoder list describes Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 streaming; that description does not establish its price, reliability or commercial terms, so check current details directly before choosing it.

When comparing approaches, consider whether the stream is real-time or prerecorded, whether the closed-lid computer actually stays awake, whether upload capacity supports your quality, whether you need a full local archive, and how you will monitor and recover from failures. There is no comparative endurance testing here that establishes which laptop models can reliably run 24/7.
