What is the layer on the iPhone Duo’s inner display?
Apple announced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, on September 9, 2026. Apple describes the inner display as protected by a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured cover layer made from custom polymer. That named layer is part of the display’s protective construction; it should not be treated as interchangeable with an ordinary screen protector.
Apple says the polymer has “up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry.” That is Apple’s own comparative product claim, not an independent durability test. Apple’s iPhone Duo announcement
Does “replaceable” mean you can replace it yourself?
Not necessarily. On October 1, Tom’s Guide reported on an interview with Apple VP of Hardware Engineering Kate Bergeron. As quoted by the publication, Bergeron said: “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.” This supports that the layer can be replaced; it is not an Apple support-manual procedure or confirmation that Apple supports owner-performed replacement.

The information available does not establish who is permitted or equipped to do the replacement, whether Apple sells the part directly to owners, what it costs, or how service availability varies by country. What to do if the layer is worn, lifting, or damaged
- Do not peel it up or try to reinstall it. The available Apple material does not give a removal method, and there is no documented DIY procedure here.
- Check Apple’s current iPhone Duo care guidance for your region, or contact Apple or an authorized service provider and ask about replacement for the inner-display cover layer.
- Before buying an aftermarket film, verify exact compatibility. Tech21 advises users of this display to follow Apple’s care instructions and use only products identified as compatible with the folding display. Why a film for another foldable is not a safe substitute
Samsung’s UK support guidance for its Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices says removing the attached main-screen film or applying a non-official film may cause touch abnormalities or screen damage. Samsung recommends visiting a service centre for replacement. That warning is specific to Samsung products; it is useful context for why foldable-display films deserve care, but it does not establish Apple’s policy or prove that the same risks apply to the iPhone Duo.
