How much does it cost to replace a phone battery?
There is no single current price that applies across phone brands and countries. As historical context, a 2023 European Commission impact-assessment document reported OEM smartphone battery-replacement costs ranging from €10 to €78 in its underlying analysis. For a useful comparison, request a written quote for your exact model. Check whether it includes the battery, labor, tax, shipping, and any extra work that may be needed if inspection finds other damage. Then compare the total with the price of a replacement phone of the same model, taking its condition and remaining software support into account.

Manufacturer or authorized service
For iPhones, Apple offers battery service and a model-specific estimate through its battery service page. Apple says its final fee may change after inspection; fees may be subject to tax, shipping may be added, and service options can vary with location and parts availability. Under AppleCare, Apple says battery service is provided at no extra charge when battery capacity is below 80%. These terms are specific to Apple and should not be assumed to apply to other brands.

Apple says it guarantees service and replacement parts for 90 days or the remaining term of the Apple warranty, whichever is longer. Check the current terms for your country and device before booking.
Independent repair
A local professional repairer may offer another route, but prices and part quality vary. Ask for the complete price in writing and what guarantee applies to the work and part. If you are in the EU, the right-to-repair rules may also affect covered repairs; the eligibility and applicable requirements depend on the product.

DIY replacement
A sealed phone is not necessarily impossible to repair, but opening it and replacing its battery may require model-specific tools and instructions. Before buying a kit, verify the phone’s exact model number and confirm that the battery and tools are explicitly compatible. Do not assume a generic battery fits, or that the repair is beginner-safe. EU guidance points consumers to supplier information on spare parts and repair tools and to a product’s EPREL page; it does not verify any particular kit or seller.

The EU right-to-repair rules began applying on 31 July 2026. The European Commission says consumers can request repair of products that are technically repairable under EU law. Covered repairs must be free or offered at a reasonable price and completed within a reasonable timeframe. If a consumer chooses repair during the liability period, the legal guarantee is extended by at least 12 months. These rules apply in the EU, not worldwide; check whether your specific phone and repair are covered in the European Commission’s right-to-repair guidance.

- Identify the exact phone model. Use the model name or number in the phone’s settings or on its packaging; do not rely on a broad product family name when checking prices or parts.
- Get a complete quote. Ask the manufacturer, an authorized provider, or a local repairer for the total, including likely taxes, shipping, and inspection-related charges.
- Check the service terms. Confirm the part source, repair guarantee, availability, and whether the quote could change after inspection.
- Compare like with like. Weigh the repair total against a same-model replacement phone, considering your phone’s condition and remaining software support.
- If considering DIY, verify compatibility first. Match the battery, tools, and instructions to the exact model before ordering anything.
Rules on portable-battery removal can also change. In a 14 July 2026 announcement, the European Commission said it had adopted exemptions and described a further step required for amendments to enter into force. That announcement alone does not establish that those exemptions are now in force; check the latest legal text before relying on them.
