You can recover files from an old hard drive with a USB adapter if the drive is compatible, still readable, and the computer can understand its file system. First match the drive’s connector and size to the adapter; then connect it, check whether its volume opens, and copy wanted files to a separate drive. An adapter only connects the disk—it does not repair a failed drive. If the disk clicks, repeatedly disconnects, or produces read errors, stop trying to access it and consider professional recovery.
1. Identify the drive and choose a compatible adapter
Before connecting anything, read the drive’s label and inspect its connector. Older drives do not all use the same interface, and a USB adapter that fits one type may not fit another. Check the adapter’s specifications for both the drive interface and physical size.

- Interface: Identify whether the drive uses SATA or IDE/PATA.
- Form factor: Determine whether it is a 2.5-inch laptop drive or a 3.5-inch desktop drive.
- Power: Check whether the adapter or dock includes the power supply required by the drive. Desktop-sized drives may need external power.
- Host connection: Confirm that the adapter’s USB connector can plug into your computer.
Some docks support both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA drives, but that does not make them compatible with IDE/PATA drives. Verify the exact interface, size, and power requirements rather than assuming one cable fits every old disk. Plugable’s recovery guidance describes using compatible SATA drives with a recovery computer.

2. Connect the drive and check whether the computer detects it
Handle the bare drive gently. Avoid forcing the connector, dropping the disk, or touching exposed contacts unnecessarily; physical force and electrostatic discharge can damage an internal drive. Connect the adapter’s cables securely, attach any required power supply, and then connect its USB cable to the computer.
#1 Best Overall
- 2.5" SATA Drives Only — SSD & HDD: Compatible with 2.5" SATA I/II/III SSDs and laptop HDDs. NOT compatible with: M.2 NVMe drives, M.2 SATA drives, 3.5" desktop HDDs, or slim SATA optical drives. Verify your drive has a standard 2.5" SATA connector before purchasing.
- USB Bus-Powered — No Adapter Needed for Most Drives: Powers most 2.5" SATA SSDs and laptop HDDs directly from USB. Note: Some older or high-capacity 2.5" mechanical HDDs may draw more current than a single USB port provides — if a drive fails to spin up, try a powered USB hub or a different USB 3.0 port.
- USB 3.0 (USB-A) — 5Gbps with UASP: Host connection is USB Type-A (USB-A). Computers with only USB-C ports require a separate USB-C to USB-A adapter (not included). UASP support for faster transfers on compatible systems.
- Plug & Play: No drivers required; hot-swappable design for quick access to drives on Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device
- Open the computer’s disk utility or drive-management view and look for the connected device.
- Check whether a volume appears and can be opened, not just whether the physical disk is listed.
- If it does not appear, check the cable and port connections and try another computer before concluding the drive has failed. Western Digital recommends checking connections and trying a different computer when a drive is not detected; exact settings vary by system. See Western Digital’s troubleshooting guidance.
Detection and readability are different: a computer may recognize the physical disk but fail to mount or browse its volume.
3. Copy files if the volume opens normally
If the volume mounts, the files are visible, and the drive shows no warning signs, copy the important files to a separate, healthy storage device. Do not use the old drive as the destination, and avoid moving files around on it. Copying gives you another copy while leaving the original data in place.

- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
Start with the most valuable files and confirm that copies open from the destination. A mounted volume on a healthy drive can generally be copied like ordinary files, as Plugable’s recovery guidance explains.
4. Cancel prompts to initialize or format
If the computer says the disk is not initialized or asks you to format it, cancel the prompt if you want files already on the drive. Initializing or formatting is setup for a new blank disk, not a safe way to make an old disk’s existing contents accessible; formatting risks erasing those contents. SanDisk’s guidance about initializing and formatting concerns a new blank internal drive in an enclosure, not recovering files from a used disk. Read SanDisk’s setup guidance.

5. Check file-system compatibility if the drive is detected but unreadable
A host computer must support the drive’s file system to browse its contents. For example, Plugable identifies NTFS as common on Windows, APFS on Apple systems, and EXT4 on Linux. If a drive came from a different operating system, try to identify that system before choosing a recovery computer or software. A USB adapter cannot make an unsupported file system readable by itself. Plugable explains this host-compatibility issue.
Encryption or RAID membership can also complicate recovery. Connecting one disk from an encrypted or RAID setup may not expose ordinary files, so do not assume the adapter alone is enough.

6. Stop if the drive shows possible failure signs
Clicks, repeated disappearance, read errors, unusually slow transfers, or corrupted copies are warning signs—not proof of a particular fault. If you encounter them, avoid repeated scans and large copy attempts. Continued use of a degrading drive can make recovery harder or impossible. An adapter does not repair mechanical or electronic failure; for valuable files, consider a professional data recovery service instead. Plugable’s guidance discusses these warning signs and escalation.

- The drive is not detected: Check the connections and try another computer. If it remains absent, an adapter may not be the problem.
- The disk is detected but its volume will not open: Check whether the host supports the file system used by the computer or device that originally stored the files.
- The disk belongs to an encrypted or RAID setup: You may need the original configuration or credentials; one connected disk may not reveal the files.
- The drive behaves unreliably or appears physically failed: Stop repeated access attempts and weigh professional recovery, especially when the files are difficult to replace.
No single adapter can be confirmed for every old drive without its model and interface. Check the drive label and the adapter’s specifications before connecting it.
