A file you deleted may still be recoverable from the Trash or Recently Deleted area of the app that handled it. If it was removed from that Trash, expired, or was deleted by an action that bypasses Trash, the app’s documented restore route may be gone. Android does not have one shared Trash: first identify the app and whether the item was stored on the phone or in a cloud library.
What “deleted” means on Android
Deletion depends on the app and the file’s location. A phone’s local file manager, a manufacturer’s Gallery app, Google Photos, and Google Drive can each have separate deletion and Trash behavior. The Files app and its steps can also vary by device; if Files by Google is not installed, the manufacturer may provide a different file manager. Google’s Android file-management guidance notes that the app experience can vary.

| Where the item was handled | Where to look | What the documented behavior means |
|---|---|---|
| Files by Google | Files by Google Trash | Items remain in Trash for 30 days before automatic deletion. Deleting an item from Trash is described as permanent deletion. Google Files Help |
| Google Photos | Google Photos Trash, and the device Gallery’s own Trash if applicable | Behavior depends on whether the item was backed up, the Android version, and where it was deleted. Google documents a 30-day Trash period for specified cases; this is not a universal Android retention period. Google Photos Help and Google Photos deletion guidance |
| Google Drive | Drive Trash | Drive files in Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days or when Trash is emptied. This is separate from deleting a local phone file. Google Drive Help |
These Trash locations are app-specific. A file missing from one does not establish whether another copy exists elsewhere, and their retention periods should not be treated as one Android-wide clock.

Can you recover permanently deleted files on Android?
There is no general recovery guarantee. If the item is still in the relevant app’s Trash, use that app’s restore option. If it has been removed from Trash or the documented retention period has passed, the restore route described by that app is no longer available. The official guidance cited here does not establish a recovery rate or show that a third-party app, accessory, or computer can restore an item after permanent deletion.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

For Google Photos, Google says items absent from the applicable Trash cannot be restored from that Trash workflow. That statement applies to the documented Google Photos process; it does not assess every phone manufacturer’s Gallery app or every possible recovery method.
Where to look for a deleted file
- Identify the app that handled it. Was it Files by Google, a manufacturer’s Gallery, Google Photos, or Drive? Check that app’s Trash or Recently Deleted area; labels and steps can vary by device.
- For Files by Google, open Trash. Restore the item if it is there. Google documents automatic deletion after 30 days, and says files deleted from Trash are permanently deleted. See the Files by Google Trash instructions.
- For photos or videos, check both relevant locations. Look in Google Photos Trash and, if you use one, the device Gallery’s Trash. Confirm the Google account and backup status before concluding that another copy exists or is missing. Google Photos explains its Trash and restore process.
- For a Drive document, check Drive Trash. A cloud file belongs in Drive’s Trash, not the phone’s Downloads folder. Google Drive’s instructions cover restoring Drive files.
- If no relevant Trash or backup contains it, the documented restore path may be unavailable. Do not assume that a recovery app or USB accessory will bring it back; the cited guidance does not establish that.
Google Photos: freeing phone space is not the same as deleting from the library
Google Photos’ “Free up space” function removes device copies of photos and videos that are safely backed up. The backed-up copies remain viewable in Google Photos when you are signed in and online. That differs from deleting an item within Google Photos, which can affect the library and devices with backup enabled. Check the item’s backup status before removing a local copy or deleting it from the library. Google’s storage guidance and Trash guidance describe these distinct actions.

Google documents a 30-day Trash period for backed-up photos and videos and certain unbacked items deleted from Android 11 and up, under the conditions in its help pages. Do not apply that period to every Gallery app, every Android version, or every deletion action. Check Google’s current Photos Trash rules.

Google Drive: cloud Trash has its own rules
Drive files placed in Drive Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days, or sooner if Trash is emptied. Permanent deletion also removes access for people the owner shared the file with. This concerns the Drive copy; it does not determine the state of an unrelated local file with the same name. Google Drive Help explains deletion and restoration.

How to reduce the risk of losing a file
- Keep a separate copy of important files before deleting them, rather than relying on a Trash folder as long-term storage.
- Verify backup completion before using a phone’s storage-cleanup option or removing local photo copies. A backup that has not completed cannot protect the item from a later deletion.
- Transfer files to a computer if you need another copy. Google documents transferring files between an Android device and a computer by USB; the exact prompts can vary by phone. Google’s USB transfer steps.
- Check compatibility before buying an external drive. A USB-C flash drive may be useful for keeping a separate copy, but connector type alone does not establish that a specific phone supports external storage.
