Can You Record Video Without a Working Camera LCD? A Guide to External Monitoring

A field monitor can show a camera’s live HDMI image, but it does not guarantee that a camera with a failed LCD can be operated or record. Check your model’s output mode and recording destination first.

Often, yes—but only if the camera still operates and outputs a live HDMI image in the recording mode you need. A compatible external monitor can replace the LCD as a viewing screen; it cannot restore inaccessible controls or guarantee the camera will start and save a recording with its LCD failed. Check the exact model’s manual and test the complete setup before relying on it.

What an external monitor can—and cannot—do

An HDMI field monitor displays the camera’s video signal so you can frame and watch a shot. It does not automatically record footage. Recording can remain on the camera’s memory card, or an external recorder can capture the signal, if the camera and connected equipment support the chosen workflow.

External monitoring also does not fix a camera that cannot be powered on, operated, or made to output a live image. Whether the camera’s buttons, menus, touch controls, focus aids, and recording controls remain usable without a functioning LCD depends on the model and the nature of the failure.

Choose where the footage will be recorded

Workflow Where footage is saved What to verify
External monitor, internal recording The camera’s memory card, if the camera supports recording to the card while sending HDMI output. Confirm live HDMI output during recording, the required HDMI setting, recording mode, and whether menus or overlays appear on the monitor.
External recorder The recorder’s supported media, if it accepts and records the camera’s HDMI signal. Confirm format compatibility, recorder media and power, whether the camera can trigger recording, and that the recorder actually starts capturing.

A monitor and recorder may look similar, but they do different jobs. Do not assume that connecting a monitor—or even seeing a picture on it—means video is being recorded.

Examples: HDMI recording behavior varies by camera and mode

Sony α7 IV (ILCE-7M4)

Sony’s α7 IV HDMI output settings guide describes a setting that records movies to the camera’s memory card while outputting them to an HDMI-connected device. Its HDMI-only option sends movies to connected HDMI devices without recording them to the camera card. These are model-specific settings, not universal menu names. Sony also notes that slow-motion/quick-motion shooting locks the HDMI media setting to internal recording, so check the guide for the mode you plan to use.

Panasonic LUMIX S cameras

Panasonic says its cited LUMIX S-Series HDMI workflow can record while outputting camera images to an external monitor or recorder. The support instructions specify a High Speed HDMI cable for the Type A-to-Type A connection they describe. Check the exact camera’s connector and instructions rather than assuming every LUMIX S model or setup uses the same cable.

Panasonic DMC-G85: display information over HDMI

On the DMC-G85, display information can also appear over HDMI; Panasonic explains how to remove it for clean output. If you need an unobstructed image, verify whether the camera offers clean output and how to enable it. The G85 instructions should not be treated as instructions for other Panasonic models.

Sony FDR-AX100/HDR-CX900: LCD and recording-mode caveats

Sony’s 2014 guide for the FDR-AX100/HDR-CX900 family says recording stops if the LCD is closed while recording when the viewfinder is retracted. It also says that in XAVC S 4K recording mode, the movie image cannot be output to an external monitor through HDMI/video; only the on-screen display is output. This illustrates why support for external displays in one mode does not establish support in another—or prove that recording continues when an LCD is unusable.

Check compatibility before depending on the setup

  1. Find the exact model’s movie HDMI instructions. Confirm that the camera outputs a live image while recording, not just during playback, and that it supports the resolution and frame rate you intend to use.
  2. Check whether you can operate the camera with the LCD failed. Confirm that it can power on, reach the required settings, start recording, and stop recording without relying on the broken display. HDMI support alone does not establish this.
  3. Match the cable and connectors to the camera. Check the camera-side HDMI connector, cable speed, resolution requirements, and any length guidance in the manual. Panasonic specifies a High Speed Type A-to-Type A cable for the cited LUMIX S connection; Sony’s α7 IV guide calls for a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for 4K output. Do not force a connector or put strain on a fragile camera port.
  4. Set and verify the recording destination. For internal recording, enable the camera’s card-plus-HDMI behavior if required. For external recording, check that the recorder supports the output format, has suitable media and power, and is actually recording. On the α7 IV, the HDMI-only selection does not save movies to the camera card.
  5. Check the image and controls on the external display. Determine whether menus, exposure information, focus aids, or other overlays appear and whether clean output is available. Confirm that you can still control the camera as needed.
  6. Test the whole workflow with nonessential footage. Check framing, focus, sound, recording destination, and playback before a critical shoot. A visible live image alone does not confirm that footage is being saved correctly.

When a monitor will not solve the problem

If the camera cannot be operated or cannot output a live HDMI signal in the required mode, an external monitor cannot provide a usable view. A fault involving controls, power, or the camera’s output port can likewise prevent the setup from working. In those cases, consider manufacturer-authorized diagnosis or LCD repair rather than assuming a monitor will bypass the fault.
