Sometimes—but recovery is never guaranteed. Deleting a file usually removes or changes its file-system record and marks the space it occupied as available; the contents may remain until that space is reused. Stop using the affected drive as much as possible, then check the Recycle Bin or Trash and any backups before trying a recovery scan.
What happens when you delete a file?
A deletion does not necessarily erase a file’s contents immediately. The file system can mark the space as available for new data, while some or all of the original contents remain there until overwritten. If new data uses that space, recovery may become harder or impossible. Microsoft warns that overwrite may have occurred, particularly on an SSD, but does not give a success rate or a guaranteed recovery window. Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance recommends minimizing or avoiding computer use after a file is lost.

What should you do right after deleting a file?
- Check the easy restore locations first. Look in Windows Recycle Bin or Mac Trash. If the file was synced to a cloud service, check that service’s deleted-items area. Also check any configured backup or previous-version history.
- Minimize use of the affected drive. Avoid saving or downloading files there, installing recovery software onto it, or continuing ordinary work if you can. Those activities can write data into space marked available after deletion; this is a practical implication of Microsoft’s overwrite warning, not a guarantee that any particular activity will overwrite the file.
- Choose a recovery route. If a backup or previous version exists, restore from it. Otherwise, consider a recovery tool appropriate to your operating system and storage.
- Recover to a different drive. Do not save recovered files back onto the drive being scanned. Microsoft says Windows File Recovery’s source and destination must be different drives; a USB or external drive can be the destination.
- Do not create a new partition after data loss. Microsoft warns that doing so reduces the chance of successful recovery.
If the drive appears to be physically failing, or the lost data is irreplaceable, stop using it and seek case-specific professional advice. The official guidance cited here does not establish a recovery threshold, price, or expected success rate for professional services.

Possibly. “Permanently deleted” often means the file was removed from the Recycle Bin or Trash, not that every bit was immediately erased. Recovery still depends on whether the file’s data remains intact and whether new writes have reused its space. No software can promise recovery in every case.

Before scanning the original drive, check backups and previous versions: they restore a separate copy rather than trying to reconstruct data from space marked available. On Windows, File History can save copies of personal files such as documents, photos, and videos to an external drive or network location, allowing previous versions to be restored. On Mac, Time Machine can restore deleted files and earlier versions.
Windows File Recovery: what it can and cannot do
Windows File Recovery is a command-line app available through the Microsoft Store. Microsoft documents it for attempting to recover deleted local files from internal drives, external drives, and USB devices when they cannot be restored from Recycle Bin. It does not support cloud storage or network file shares.

The Microsoft instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. However, support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; the fact that the recovery guidance covers it does not mean Windows 10 remains in normal support.

Choose a mode based on file system and what happened
| Situation in Microsoft’s guidance | Recommended mode |
|---|---|
| NTFS, recently deleted files | Regular |
| NTFS, older deletion, formatting, or corruption | Extensive |
| FAT or exFAT | Extensive; Microsoft says non-NTFS recovery is supported only in Extensive mode |
Microsoft’s instructions include command examples and explain how to specify a destination drive. Because the correct syntax and supported file-system details matter, use the current instructions for your Windows version rather than copying a command without checking its options. If the source is the Windows operating-system drive, Microsoft advises using filters to specify the files or folders sought. Keep the destination on another drive.

Recovering files on a Mac: Trash, Time Machine, and snapshots
Start with Trash, then use Time Machine if you have it configured. Apple also documents local snapshots on APFS: macOS creates them hourly and keeps them for up to 24 hours or until disk space is needed. They may help when the backup disk is not connected, but they remain on the Mac’s own disk. They are not a substitute for a separate backup if the internal drive fails; Apple recommends keeping a Time Machine backup somewhere other than the internal disk. Apple’s Time Machine guidance covers restoring files and explains these snapshot conditions.
Can you recover files from an SSD?
Sometimes, but the result is particularly uncertain. Microsoft specifically warns that deleted data may have been overwritten, especially on an SSD. Its guidance does not quantify SSD recovery odds or explain device-specific TRIM behavior, so it would be inaccurate to say every SSD deletion is instantly unrecoverable—or to promise that recovery software can reverse SSD cleanup. Stop writing to the drive and check backups before attempting recovery.

How to choose your next step
- Still in Recycle Bin or Trash: restore it there.
- A backup or previous version exists: use that copy first.
- Local Windows file, no backup: Windows File Recovery is one documented option; it does not cover cloud files or network shares.
- Mac with Time Machine: check the backup and, where applicable, available local snapshots.
- Drive has been used heavily since deletion, or is an SSD: recovery is more uncertain; avoid further writes.
- No separate destination drive is available: obtain a USB or external drive before using Windows File Recovery, rather than writing output onto the source.
The cited Microsoft and Apple pages do not provide controlled head-to-head recovery tests or success rates for tools, storage types, or media. Treat any specific promise of guaranteed recovery with skepticism.
