Sometimes. Android’s Notification history can show text from a message notification you dismissed—but only if your phone offers the feature, it was enabled when the notification arrived, and the app displayed the message in that notification. It does not restore deleted messages from an app’s chat history.
How to check Android notification history
-
Open Settings and tap Notifications.
-
Tap Notification history. If your phone offers an off/on switch, turn it on. Menu names and availability vary by device; Google notes that some Android devices do not include the feature (Google Android Help: Control notifications on Android).

-
Return to the Notification history screen to review notifications, including recent and dismissed items. Pixel users can follow Google’s device-specific instructions in Manage notifications on your Pixel phone.

If you cannot find the setting, search Settings for “notification history” or consult your phone maker’s support guidance. The exact location is not the same on every Android device.

It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).

What the history can—and cannot—show
It may preserve text that appeared in a notification
Notification history is a record of notifications the phone received. If a messaging app included message text in a notification, that text may be visible there after you dismiss the notification. Android’s help describes the feature as a way to review snoozed, recently dismissed, and recent notifications (Google Android Help).
It does not recover a message from the app
This is not a tool for restoring a message deleted from WhatsApp, Telegram, or another app. It cannot show content that never arrived as a notification, and it may not show message text if the app’s notification settings did not expose it. Android’s documentation describes a notification log, not a way to retrieve every app’s deleted messages (Android Open Source Project: Notification history).

History starts only after you enable it
Turning on Notification history does not bring back notifications from before it was enabled. The Android Open Source Project states: “When it’s off, all history items are deleted and no items are written to the log.” (Android Open Source Project: Notification history)
Retention also varies. The AOSP reference implementation keeps notification history for 24 hours by default, but manufacturers can configure a different number of days; 24 hours is not a universal promise for every Android phone (Android Open Source Project: Notification history).

Consider who can see notification content
Notification history can retain private message text, so consider what appears on your lock screen. Android includes controls for hiding sensitive notification content, although the setting path can vary by device. Google’s guidance explains notification controls, including lock-screen options, in Control notifications on Android.
