There is no universal time limit for reactivating a SIM card. It depends on why service stopped, your country, and your carrier’s policy. A registration-related suspension may be fixed within days, while an expired prepaid number may have only a short recovery window. Contact your carrier promptly and ask whether the line is active, suspended, terminated, or recycled—and what exact steps and deadline apply.
What does “reactivate a SIM” mean?
People often use “deactivated SIM,” “expired SIM,” “blocked SIM,” “disconnected number,” and “recycled number” to describe different situations. The distinction matters because the remedy changes with the line’s status.

- Suspended or blocked: Service is paused, potentially because of an administrative issue such as incomplete identity registration. The number may still be recoverable.
- Expired: A prepaid validity period or account grace period has ended. Some carriers allow reactivation for a limited time.
- Terminated or permanently disconnected: The carrier has ended the service. A separate recycling period may follow, but that does not guarantee the former customer can reclaim the number.
- Recycled: The number has returned to the carrier’s available pool or been assigned to another customer. The reviewed policies do not establish a right to recover it after that point.
- Lost or damaged SIM: A replacement SIM is a hardware/account-service step for an existing subscriber. It does not, by itself, reverse termination or restore a recycled number.
Ask the carrier to identify the line’s current status before buying a replacement SIM or attempting a top-up.

Published policies differ by country, carrier, and reason for suspension. The figures below are examples of particular rules, not a global standard or a prediction for another carrier. The deadline may start from the last use, expiry, cancellation, or formal deactivation.

| Telekom Deutschland, Germany | For prepaid cards, up to 112 days from cancellation; imported numbers have a 90-day window. | The carrier must perform reactivation. After restoration, top up within 14 days to avoid automatic cancellation. The carrier says a top-up before cancellation can prevent deactivation. Telekom Deutschland prepaid support |
| Orange Egypt | Prepaid lines are deactivated after 90 days from last use; postpaid lines after 180 days from last use. Each has a 15-day reactivation window after deactivation. | After the window, Orange says it may cancel the contract and resell the line. Orange Egypt FAQ |
| Cambodia | From January 1, 2026, numbers expired for no more than 180 days may be reactivated. | The Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia says users can restore service by topping up the main account, without visiting a company location to re-register. Operators must retain remaining main-account balance for 180 days after expiry and restore it when the user tops up in that period; they must also send at least two reminders before the period ends. This is a Cambodia-specific rule. Telecommunication Regulator announcement, December 22, 2025 |
| Reliance Jio, India | A prepaid number may be deactivated at the carrier’s discretion after 90 days of non-use; the stated reactivation window after deactivation is 15 days. | Jio’s policy lists a Rs. 20 payment, re-KYC, and applicable recharge for reactivation. If the main balance exceeds Rs. 20 at the 90-day point, the policy says Rs. 20 is deducted to extend the non-use period by 30 days, repeating until the balance falls below Rs. 20. Jio policy |
| Telkomsel SIMPATI, Indonesia | The carrier describes a 30-day grace period after active validity ends, followed by a 60-day blocking period. It also describes a 60-day recycling period after expiry before the number may be prepared for resale. | There is a limited opportunity to reactivate an expired card; check the carrier’s linked instructions for the account-specific procedure. Telkomsel support |
| Dialog, Sri Lanka | Prepaid validity can extend up to 365 days based on recharge. If not recharged before expiry, permanent disconnection follows a 52-day grace period; prepaid numbers are recycled six months after permanent disconnection. Postpaid numbers are recycled one year after permanent disconnection under the stated policy. | These are Dialog policy timelines, not a general rule for Sri Lanka or other carriers. Dialog policy |
| Hong Kong registration suspension | In a 2023 notice about prepaid SIMs suspended for failure to complete real-name registration, providers were to restore eligible service within no more than two days, depending on registration volume. | The process applied to eligible cards that had not expired and still had value. Registration could be completed through a provider’s electronic platform, retail outlet, or direct contact. This is an administrative-registration case, not an expiry timeline. When is it too late to get your number back?
It may be too late once the carrier’s recovery window ends and the number is returned to its pool or assigned to someone else. The exact point depends on the carrier’s policy and the status of that specific number. Orange Egypt, for example, says it may resell a line after its 15-day post-deactivation window. Dialog publishes a six-month recycling interval after permanent disconnection for prepaid numbers, while Telkomsel describes a 60-day recycle period after the expired period.
India’s Department of Telecommunications instructions say a deactivated or disconnected mobile number may not be allocated to another subscriber until 90 days have elapsed. That is a country-specific reallocation rule, not a promise that the former customer can demand reactivation throughout those 90 days. Department of Telecommunications instructions

Do not infer your deadline from another operator’s timeline. Ask your carrier whether your number is still recoverable and, if so, the final date to act.

- Contact the carrier through an official channel. Use its app, support number, website, or store. Give the affected number and ask whether it is active, suspended, permanently disconnected, or recycled.
- Get the deadline and its starting point. Ask whether the clock runs from last use, plan expiry, cancellation, or formal deactivation, and request the final date for recovery.
- Confirm every required step at once. Ask whether you need identity verification or re-KYC, a top-up, a fee, a replacement SIM, or an in-person visit. Some carriers require carrier-assisted restoration; Jio’s published example lists payment, re-KYC, and applicable recharge. Telekom Deutschland prepaid support Jio policy
- Request a SIM replacement only if the account remains active. If the SIM is lost or defective, ask about a SIM swap for the existing subscriber. India’s Department of Telecommunications defines replacement as acquiring a new SIM for an existing subscriber in place of a lost or non-working SIM; it is not a general method for reclaiming a terminated number. Department of Telecommunications instructions
- If the number cannot be recovered, secure accounts that use it. Change the number on banking, messaging, email, and other important services where possible. Review account-recovery options and protect any account that still sends verification codes to the old number. Telkomsel warns that recycled numbers may later be used by another person and may be linked to banking, fintech, e-commerce, messaging, and social accounts. Telkomsel guidance on recycled numbers
