It is an alcoholic drink; fuel ethanol is a different, denatured product used in measured gasoline blends that are approved for particular vehicles. Use the fuel specified in your owner’s manual and sold at a properly labeled pump.
Tequila and fuel ethanol are not interchangeable
Mexico’s official tequila standard, NOM-006-SCFI-2012, defines tequila as an alcoholic beverage with an alcohol content of 35%–55% by volume. The Diario Oficial de la Federación’s 2012 standard does not establish tequila as a vehicle fuel.

Fuel ethanol is made for use as a transportation fuel, chiefly as a measured component in gasoline. In the United States, the Energy Information Administration describes blends including E10, E15, and E85. Fuel ethanol also has a denaturant added to make it unfit for human consumption, unlike beverage tequila. See the EIA’s explanation of ethanol use and its FAQ on ethanol in gasoline.

| Product | What the sources establish | Vehicle use |
|---|---|---|
| Beverage tequila | Alcoholic beverage; 35%–55% alcohol by volume under Mexico’s 2012 tequila standard. | Not established as a suitable fuel substitute by the cited sources. |
| Fuel ethanol | Denatured ethanol used as a measured component in gasoline blends, according to the U.S. EIA. | Use depends on the gasoline blend and vehicle eligibility. |
Which ethanol-gasoline blends can a vehicle use?
The rules below describe U.S. guidance, not universal requirements. Check the vehicle manual and local fuel labeling wherever you live.
#1 Best Overall
- Wide Mouth Design for Fewer Spills: Designed specifically with a wide mouth to easily pour gasoline and water into the bottle without spills and leaks. No more getting gas on your hands or searching for a funnel to fill and test your ethanol levels
- Reusable Over and Over: This fuel test bottle allows you to measure ethanol or E85 levels in your gasoline hundreds of times, with a screen-printed label made to last
- Quick and Clear Results: Test your gasoline levels in 5 minutes and three simple steps. Add water to the Water Fill Line. Then add gas to the Gasoline Fill Line. Shake well and wait five minutes. Gasoline and water will separate to provide clear results
- Easy to Read Label: With bright Water and Gasoline Fill lines and clear percentage levels, measuring gasohol, ethanol or E85 levels in your fuel has never been easier
- Protect Your Engine in Minutes: Ensure correct ethanol levels to protect and maintain your engine with our quick 5 minute test. Whether you are looking for an ethanol test kit or an E85 test kit, this bottle will correctly measure alcohol levels in both types of gasoline
- E10: EIA says all gasoline vehicles can use E10 in the United States.
- E15: U.S. eligibility is limited; do not assume a vehicle can use it without checking the manufacturer’s guidance.
- E85: It is for flex-fuel vehicles. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says its ethanol content varies by geography and season. See EPA’s E85 Fuel guidance.
Would tequila work in an engine?
The cited sources do not test tequila in an engine or establish what would happen to a particular vehicle if it were poured into the tank. They also do not identify beverage tequila as a suitable substitute for fuel ethanol. There is no evidence here to support trying it or to promise a specific repair outcome. Do not experiment with it in a vehicle.
The energy figures sometimes cited for ethanol do not answer that question: EIA reports fuel ethanol has about 33% less energy than pure gasoline, and estimates that E10 may reduce fuel economy by about 3%. Those figures concern fuel ethanol and gasoline—not tequila used in an engine.

What to do if you are choosing fuel
- Check the owner’s manual or fuel-door label for the approved gasoline grade and any ethanol-blend limits.
- At the pump, choose a fuel whose label matches the vehicle’s requirements; follow local guidance if it differs from U.S. blend descriptions.
- Do not put beverage alcohol in the tank as a fuel substitute.
