The exception that often causes confusion is the SMART Board 6000/6000 Pro, whose bottom frame has built-in magnetic holders for its designed pens—not permission to attach magnets to the display surface.
Can you put magnets on a SMART Board?
It depends on the model and where the magnet would go. For the M700/M700V, 800, and M600/M600V families covered by SMART’s guidance, do not attach magnets to the interactive surface. These systems use optical sensing, and an object on the surface can obstruct cameras or interfere with touch detection.

SMART’s M700/M700V instructions are explicit: “Don’t attach objects (decorations, magnets, stickers, and so on) to your interactive whiteboard’s screen.” SMART’s M700/M700V performance guidance gives that direction. For the 800 series, SMART warns that magnets, stickers, or adhesive tape on the interactive surface can obstruct the cameras’ view; its 800-series performance guidance describes the same concern.

The model-specific guidance matters: the 6000/6000 Pro pen holders are a designed frame feature. SMART says to use pens designed for those display series and center each pen in its holder. SMART’s instructions for using the 6000/6000 Pro pens do not grant general permission to put magnets on a display surface.

For the M600/M600V series, SMART’s performance guidance identifies magnets as possible obstructions to camera detection. A separate SMART Board 480 maintenance page addresses adhesive tape, but does not establish a magnet-specific warning for that model.
Will magnets interfere with touch or writing?
They can on the optical systems identified above if they obstruct the cameras or touch-sensing area. SMART’s troubleshooting instructions for the M700/M700V, 800, and M600/M600V say to remove magnets and other potential obstructions when diagnosing touch problems. That makes removal a sensible troubleshooting step; it does not mean a magnet is necessarily the cause of every problem.

If touch or digital-ink alignment is inaccurate, the pointer moves erratically, or writing has gaps, remove magnets, stickers, or adhesive tape that may be in the sensing area, then follow the complete instructions for your model in SMART’s interactive whiteboard troubleshooting guidance.

What to check before attaching anything
- Identify the exact model. Check the model label or the board’s documentation; advice for one product family does not automatically apply to another.
- Check the location. A built-in pen holder on the bottom frame is different from placing an object on the interactive surface.
- Use only the designed accessory. For a 6000/6000 Pro pen holder, use a pen designed for that series and center it in the holder.
- When in doubt, leave the surface clear. The cited guidance does not establish a safe magnet strength or endorse a type of magnet for the interactive surface.
