Yes—if the specific game supports cross-play between PS5 and Xbox, and both players meet its requirements. A game being available on both consoles does not automatically mean its players can join each other.
Can PS5 and Xbox players play together?
Sometimes. Cross-play is decided game by game, not by the consoles alone. Check the game’s current official support information for an explicit statement that PlayStation and Xbox players can play together. General multiplayer support is not enough to establish cross-play.

Even when a game supports cross-play, access can depend on the console generation, game mode, linked accounts, privacy settings, and the game’s invite system.

What to check before inviting an Xbox friend
- Confirm the exact game supports PS5-to-Xbox cross-play. Check its official support page or in-game cross-play information; do not assume that matching console availability means shared multiplayer.
- Check console generation and game version. Some games separate players by generation or edition. In EA SPORTS FC, EA says the current-generation cross-play pool includes PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, while PS4 and Xbox One are in the older-generation pool. A PS5 player therefore cannot use the current-generation pool to play against a PS4 player. EA says Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions do not support FC cross-play.
- Make sure you are in a supported mode. Cross-play may be available in only some modes. For Madden NFL 26, EA lists cross-play among PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in online Head-to-Head, Franchise, Madden Ultimate Team, Superstar KO, and Superstar Showdown.
- Complete any account linking and search for the right player ID. Minecraft on PlayStation requires linking a Microsoft account to the PSN account to play with friends on other platforms or use Realms. Madden NFL 26 uses EA Connect Player Search to find a player by EA ID or platform identifier.
- Check cross-play privacy settings on both consoles. In Fortnite on PlayStation, open Settings > Account and Privacy > Gameplay Privacy and set Allow Cross Platform Play to Yes. Epic warns that turning cross-play off can leave some modes playable only in Solo. Xbox players should check Xbox’s cross-network settings.
- Use the game’s own invite flow and check subscription requirements. PS5 supports game group joins and invitations, but PlayStation says invitation methods vary by game. Some online multiplayer games require PlayStation Plus, so check the game’s current service details.

These are examples, not a complete list. Cross-play support and requirements can change with game updates, so confirm the current rules for the title you want to play.

Why a PS5 system invite may not work
A system-level invitation cannot add cross-play support that a game does not provide. If the game supports cross-play, its own friends list, player search, or invitation flow may be needed instead of—or in addition to—a PS5 game group invite. Follow the game’s instructions for adding and joining players across platforms.
