Yes. A Sega Genesis can work with a modern TV if you connect it through a compatible analog input or use an analog-to-HDMI scaler. The right setup depends on your Genesis model, the cable’s signal, and the inputs your TV or scaler accepts.
Check your Genesis and TV before choosing a cable
The original Genesis outputs analog video, not HDMI. Genesis models can also use different AV connector styles, so first check the model number on your console and inspect its AV port. Then check the TV’s inputs or manual: a yellow RCA-style jack is not necessarily a composite input, and component-video inputs do not automatically accept composite video.

Match the cable to the console and the cable’s signal to the TV or scaler. A cable that physically fits is not, by itself, proof that the full connection will work.
Connect composite directly when the TV supports it
SEGA’s Genesis Model 2 instruction manual documents a composite connection from the console to a TV or monitor. Connect the console-side AV plug to the console, then connect the yellow plug to the TV’s composite video input and the white plug to its audio input. Select that input on the TV.

The manual describes the yellow-plug connection this way: “Insert the yellow plug on the Audio/Video Cable into the composite TV or monitor’s video input jack (or into the VCR video input jack).” — SEGA, Genesis Model 2 Instruction Manual.
This is the simplest route if your particular TV has compatible composite video and audio inputs. The instructions above are for Model 2; confirm that an AV cable is made for your Genesis model before buying. The manual also describes routing through a VCR, but that option only helps if you still have suitable equipment.

Use a scaler if the TV only has HDMI
A scaler accepts an analog video signal and produces digital video for an HDMI TV. Choose one whose listed inputs match the signal from your Genesis cable; the words “HDMI converter” alone do not establish compatibility.

Composite into a scaler
The RetroTINK-2X Pro product information lists composite, S-Video, and component inputs and describes line-doubled digital output. It specifically cautions that Sega Genesis composite output may not work correctly and recommends HD Retrovision cables for Genesis. Check the scaler’s current compatibility notes before choosing this path.

RGB or component into a scaler
Genesis setups can use analog RGB, and some cables convert RGB to component for a scaler with a component input. The RetroTINK-5X Pro product page lists composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART inputs, with digital output intended for HDTVs; it advises using higher-quality connections for best results.
RGB and component cables are not universal across Genesis models and regions. Verify the console connector, cable wiring and region, and the scaler’s actual input before ordering. A model-compatible cable plus a matching scaler input is the relevant signal path—not simply a cable labeled “HDMI.”

Compare the connection options
| Connection | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Composite AV cable directly to TV | The TV has compatible composite video and audio inputs. | The cable matches the Genesis model, and the TV input is genuinely composite. |
| Composite cable into scaler, then HDMI | The TV is HDMI-only and the scaler accepts the signal. | Check the exact scaler’s Genesis composite advisory; compatibility can be a concern. |
| RGB or component cable into scaler, then HDMI | The scaler accepts the cable’s output format and you want a cleaner analog signal path. | Confirm Genesis model and region, cable connector and wiring, and the scaler’s RGB, SCART, or component input. |
Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect picture
- No picture: Confirm the TV is set to the input used, the plugs are in matching video and audio inputs, and the cable fits your Genesis model.
- Composite plugged into component: Check the TV manual. Component inputs and composite inputs carry different signals, even when their connectors look similar.
- Genesis composite through a scaler: Consult that scaler’s Genesis-specific compatibility notes; the 2X Pro warns that Genesis composite may not work correctly.
- Considering RGB or component: Verify the cable’s output format and the scaler’s corresponding input rather than assuming all analog cables provide the same signal.
There is no universal guarantee that every Genesis revision, modern TV, and converter will work together. The console model, TV inputs, cable wiring, and scaler support determine the suitable setup.
