Usually, you can’t pair a generic Bluetooth speaker with a Roku TV to play the TV’s show or movie audio. Roku’s Bluetooth instructions mainly cover the opposite direction: playing audio from a phone, tablet, or computer through a compatible Roku device. The available options depend on your exact TV or Roku audio-device model.
Why your Bluetooth speaker may not appear as a Roku TV audio option
Bluetooth can carry audio in either direction, but support for one direction does not imply support for the other. Roku documents pairing a phone, tablet, or computer to a compatible Roku device so the mobile device’s audio plays through the Roku system. That is not a method for sending Roku TV program audio to a generic Bluetooth speaker. Roku’s Bluetooth guidance identifies a limited set of compatible devices.

Roku says a Bluetooth device can connect directly to a Plus Series TV. For other Roku TV systems, the documented Bluetooth capability requires Roku Wireless Speakers or a Roku TV Wireless Soundbar. Roku also lists Select Series 4K (2025) and Pro Series TVs among compatible Bluetooth hosts. Check the exact model rather than assuming every Roku TV supports the same features.

- On the Roku device, press Home on the remote and go to Settings > Remotes & devices > Smartphones & tablets > Add a new smartphone or tablet.
- On your phone, tablet, or computer, turn on Bluetooth and select the Roku device when it appears.
- After it connects, play audio on the source device. The Roku Bluetooth app launches and plays that audio through the Roku system.
To disconnect, use the Bluetooth settings on the source device or the Roku menus. The compatible hosts Roku names include Streambar SE, Streambar, Streambar Pro, Roku Smart Soundbar/onn. Roku Smart Soundbar, Ultra models 4800, 4802, and 4850, Ultra LT 4801, Select Series 4K (2025), Plus Series TV, Pro Series TV, and Roku TV systems paired with Roku Wireless Speakers or a Roku TV Wireless Soundbar. Roku specifically excludes older Ultra models 4670, 4661, 4660, and 4640, and Ultra LT 4662, from this feature. Consult the current Roku compatibility guidance for your model.
Options for listening to Roku TV audio
Use Roku Wireless Speakers with a compatible host
Roku Wireless Speakers (models 9020R2, 9030, or 9040) are a Roku ecosystem option, not generic Bluetooth speakers. Roku lists compatibility with Roku TVs, Streambar, Streambar Pro, and Smart Soundbar. On a Roku TV, they work as stereo speakers; with supported Streambars or Smart Soundbars, they work as surround speakers.

They do not work with Streambar SE, other TVs or sound systems, or standalone Roku streaming players. Roku’s setup requires a compatible host, internet connection, power near the speakers, and the Roku remote. For details, see Roku’s Wireless Speakers setup and compatibility instructions.

- Plug in the speakers.
- On the Roku remote, hold Home for five seconds, or go to Settings > Remotes & devices > Set up a new device.
- Select Wireless speakers and follow the prompts, including assigning speaker locations.
Roku specifies operation up to 30 feet away with a good wireless signal. A Roku TV supports up to two speakers; the named Streambar and Smart Soundbar hosts support up to four. These are Roku’s specifications, not independent performance measurements.

Check the Roku TV Wireless Soundbar option
Roku lists its Roku TV Wireless Soundbar as another compatible device in its Bluetooth guidance. That does not mean the TV can pair with any Bluetooth speaker. Confirm compatibility for your particular TV and soundbar before choosing this route. Roku’s Bluetooth device list and speaker setup guidance provide the applicable details.
Use Headphone Mode for private listening
If your goal is to listen without sound coming from the TV speakers, Headphone Mode is an option for compatible headphones—not a workaround for sending TV audio to a Bluetooth speaker. Roku lists Bluetooth Headphone Mode for Streaming Stick 4K+ and Select Series 4K (2025), Plus Series, and Pro Series TVs. Some compatible Streambars and Smart Soundbars can also support headphones paired directly to the soundbar. Check the Roku Headphone Mode compatibility instructions for your model.

You can also use the Roku mobile app: connect the Roku device and phone or tablet to the same wireless network, pair Bluetooth headphones to the mobile device, open the app’s Remote screen, and tap the headphone icon. Roku says mobile Headphone Mode supports up to four mobile devices at once. This sends sound to headphones connected to those devices, not to a Bluetooth speaker. Some external devices connected to a Streambar or soundbar are not supported in Headphone Mode; follow the model-specific instructions at Roku support and Roku Wireless Speakers support.

Does Roku TV audio work with the screen off?
For Bluetooth audio with the screen off using Roku Wireless Speakers, Roku TV Wireless Soundbar, or a Plus Series TV, Roku says to enable Fast TV Start. Roku warns that Fast TV Start uses significantly more power than normal standby and overrides the default power settings. It is relevant to screen-off playback, not a general prerequisite for pairing. See Roku’s Bluetooth instructions and Wireless Speakers instructions.

If you are considering a third-party Bluetooth transmitter, first check the TV’s actual audio outputs and confirm that the transmitter works with them. Roku’s cited instructions do not establish a universal transmitter solution.
