PS5SX2 is a native PS5 port of PCSX2 for PS2 titles; XPSemu is a separate native PS5 port of xemu for the first-generation Xbox. Neither offers guaranteed compatibility across its console’s library, and both require files supplied by the user.
Which emulator handles each console?
| Console | PS5 project | Based on | Current evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 2 | PS5SX2 | PCSX2 | The project reports 108 games started during development or initial testing in September 2026; it says this is not a compatibility guarantee. |
| Original Xbox (the first-generation Xbox, sometimes called Xbox 1) | XPSemu | xemu | Alpha 1, the first public build, lists four developer-tested examples and warns of bugs, missing features, and slowdowns. |
These are two distinct homebrew projects, not one emulator with both consoles’ support. XPSemu is the PS5 port; upstream xemu documents Windows, macOS, and Linux as its desktop platforms, not PS5 installation. See the upstream xemu site for that project’s scope.

What you need before using either project
Both routes are for a jailbroken PS5 that can run homebrew. Their documentation also calls for helper or app-mounting tools and system and game files that you provide. Neither project includes the BIOS or games.
Recommended Free Tools
PS2 requirements
- A jailbroken PS5 and the PS5SX2 Helper payload loaded with kstuff.
- ShadowMountPlus or an equivalent app-mounting setup.
- Your own PS2 BIOS, dumped from your own console, and your own game files. PS5SX2 lists ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO game formats.
PS5SX2 documents USB storage as an option for placing game and BIOS files in named folders, as well as storing them on the console. An external USB drive can therefore help manage those files; the project documentation does not establish that any particular drive model was tested. See the PS5SX2 README for its current file locations and setup notes.

Original Xbox requirements
- A jailbroken PS5 able to run homebrew.
- XPSemu Tools alongside kstuff, plus a way to mount the app.
- Your own Xbox MCPX boot ROM, Xbox BIOS/flash ROM, hard-disk image, and game files.
- Games in XISO format. XPSemu says full redump images need conversion.
The XPSemu README lists these requirements and says the required system and game files are not included.
How well do the games run?
Compatibility is title- and build-specific. A game starting is not the same as sustained full-speed play. Check the current project notes for the exact title and firmware rather than treating a feature list or a reported launch as proof of playability.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
PS2: early testing, not a library-wide guarantee
PS5SX2 says its game table covers 108 titles started during development or initial testing in September 2026 and explicitly warns that this does not guarantee compatibility. Results can change between builds, so use the per-game notes for the title you plan to run.
The project’s tested-console section lists PS5 Pro firmware 10.01 and 11.40, and other PS5 models, including a Slim, on firmware 6.02, 8.40, 10.01, 10.60, 11.40, 11.60, 12.00, and 12.70. According to the project, unlisted firmware has not been tried; this list is not a promise that every listed game works on every listed console and firmware combination.

PS5SX2 describes itself as a native PCSX2 port. Its documentation says PCSX2 recompilers run on the PS5 CPU and a Vulkan renderer draws through a modified PS5 Vulkan driver. It advertises features including upscaling, patches, save states, and per-game configuration, but those features do not establish how a particular game performs.
A separate native PS5 RetroArch project also documents a PS2 core path. Its README reports tests of the God of War II and Final Fantasy X demos and GTA San Andreas at 6× internal resolution and full speed, with multi-threaded VU1 and save states. Those are reports for that separate project and the named tests, not a general replacement for PS5SX2’s game-specific information.

Original Xbox: XPSemu Alpha 1 examples
XPSemu describes Alpha 1 as its first public build: it boots and plays real games, but users should expect bugs, missing features, and slow scenes in CPU-heavy games. The author attributes performance limits to the emulated Xbox CPU. The figures below are developer-reported Alpha 1 results accessed in October 2026, not independent benchmark measurements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Game | Developer-reported Alpha 1 result |
|---|---|
| Halo 2 | 30 FPS stock; with a 60 FPS patch, 51–60 FPS in the opening and 36–50 FPS during gameplay. |
| Forza Motorsport | 30 FPS in menus and the intro, but 15–21 FPS while racing. |
| Fable: The Lost Chapters | 22–30 FPS in many areas and 10–20 FPS in heavy areas. |
| Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex | Reported to run smoothly; no FPS figure stated. |
Alpha 1 also has a 64 MB emulated Xbox memory limit, no save states, and a requirement to keep DSP off for most games, according to the project README. The same README cautions that performance can dip below a game’s frame-rate cap in CPU-heavy scenes.

Is this official PS5 backward compatibility?
No. These are community emulator projects running as homebrew on a jailbroken console, not Sony-supported PS2 or original Xbox playback. Sony’s backward-compatibility guidance covers the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games and describes PS4 compatibility caveats; it does not document these PS2 or Xbox emulator routes.
Choosing between the PS2 and Xbox routes
PS5SX2 has a broader early game-start list and documented firmware testing, but a start is not proof of smooth, complete play. XPSemu is at its first public alpha and has only a small published test table, including clear performance drops in some demanding scenes. In either case, consult the project’s current compatibility notes for your game and setup before relying on it.
