You can play modern games without owning a console by running them on a capable gaming PC, streaming supported games from a cloud service, or using a personal gaming PC to stream games to another device. The right option depends on the games you want, your hardware, internet connection, preferred screen and controls, and whether you need offline play.
Three ways to play without a console
Install and run games on a PC
A Windows PC can run downloaded games from platforms such as Steam, the Epic Games Store, GOG, and Xbox. The game uses your PC’s processor and graphics hardware, so check the requirements for each title before buying or downloading it. Installed play can work offline when the game allows it, and a suitable PC can be a better fit for performance-sensitive games. The trade-off is the cost of hardware capable of running the games you want.

Microsoft’s Windows PC gaming guide explains how to find and play PC games. Downloading means waiting for an install, but it avoids the dependence on a live stream once the game is set up.
Stream games from a cloud service
With cloud gaming, a remote service runs the game and streams its picture and sound to your device. Your inputs travel back over the internet. This avoids needing a gaming PC, but it does not provide access to every game: titles, devices, regions, network conditions, and plan requirements all matter.

Xbox Cloud Gaming offers selected games on supported devices including Windows PCs, phones, tablets, select smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, and some VR headsets. Most games require an eligible Game Pass plan, while selected free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account. A compatible controller is needed for most games, though some titles offer touch controls or other input methods.
On the current US Xbox Cloud Gaming page, accessed October 11, 2026, the listed monthly cloud-playtime allowances are five hours for Essential, ten for Premium, and fifteen for Ultimate. Xbox says plan limits and game availability can vary; these figures are specific to the US page and may change. PC Game Pass does not include Xbox Cloud Gaming. Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming page for your region and plan before subscribing.

GeForce NOW streams a supported catalog of PC games. You need access to a supported title through a connected game store or subscription, and should check that the specific game is available on the service. NVIDIA lists computers, phones, tablets, smart TVs, Fire TV devices, and gaming handhelds among supported device categories.

For several device categories, NVIDIA’s requirements list 15 Mbps for HD at up to 60 FPS and 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS. It recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and requires latency below 80 ms to a data center. These are service requirements, not a promise that play will be smooth on every connection; requirements vary with device and quality target.

Stream from a gaming PC you own
Steam Remote Play sends video and audio from a game running on your gaming PC to another device, which sends your controls back. You can use this to play on a phone, TV, or another computer, but the host PC still needs to run the game. This is remote access to your own hardware, not cloud gaming.
Can you play Xbox games without an Xbox?
Sometimes. Xbox Cloud Gaming lets you stream selected games to supported devices without owning an Xbox console, subject to its game, plan, device, and regional availability. It is not a way to play every Xbox title: check the current cloud library for the specific game you want. You can also play PC versions of some games on a Windows computer, but availability and purchases or subscriptions depend on the title.

Can you play games on a TV or regular laptop?
On a TV
You may be able to stream directly to a supported smart TV or Fire TV device, depending on the service, model, region, and game. Alternatively, use a computer or other compatible device connected to the TV. For PC remote play, the gaming PC remains the machine running the game.

A laptop that is not powerful enough to run a demanding game locally may still work as a screen for cloud gaming, provided it is compatible with the service and has a reliable internet connection. For local PC gaming, compare its hardware with the individual game’s requirements; “laptop” or “Windows PC” alone does not establish that it can run a particular game.

How to choose the right route
- Choose local PC gaming if you have, or want, a PC that meets your games’ requirements, value performance, or need offline access where a game permits it.
- Choose cloud gaming if you do not want to buy a gaming PC and your preferred games, device, and region are supported. Check subscription limits and connection quality first.
- Choose remote play if you already own a gaming PC and want to play its games on another screen around your home or elsewhere.
Before committing, check the specific game catalog, device and regional support, controller compatibility, internet stability and latency, offline needs, subscription limits, and the overall cost. No single route is best for everyone.
