Yes—but not universally. Controllers are the safest choice for cloud gaming, while keyboard-and-mouse play depends on the service, client device, and individual game. A setup that works on a Windows computer may be restricted to app navigation on a TV or unavailable on a phone.
What determines whether your input device works?
Cloud gaming sends a game’s video output to your device and sends your controls back to the service. That return path is governed by three separate compatibility decisions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The service: Each provider defines which input devices its clients can recognize.
- The client device: A Windows or Mac computer, browser, phone, tablet, smart TV, streaming box, or headset may expose different controls to the game.
- The game: A title can support a controller, keyboard and mouse, touch controls, or a combination even when the service itself supports all of them.
There is also an important distinction between navigating an app and playing a game. A keyboard may move through a cloud-gaming menu without being accepted once gameplay begins. Always verify the exact service, device and title combination before buying an accessory.

Controller, keyboard and mouse support at a glance
| Service | Computer gameplay | TV or streaming-device gameplay | Phone and tablet considerations | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GeForce NOW | Keyboard and mouse are supported on computer platforms; NVIDIA recommends a USB gaming mouse. Supported Xbox and PlayStation gamepads are also listed. | Physical keyboard and mouse can navigate the app only. A supported gamepad is required to play games on TVs. | Controller support is client-specific. NVIDIA lists supported controllers for Android and iOS and recommends a phone gamepad clip for handheld play. | Additional controllers may need drivers or software updates. Mouse stutter can sometimes be reduced by lowering polling to 125 Hz. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | A compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB is the current general setup requirement. Do not assume keyboard-and-mouse gameplay without checking the title and client. | Supported devices include selected smart TVs and Amazon Fire TV; controller requirements still apply unless a particular game offers another input method. | Windows PCs, Apple and Android mobile devices, Xbox consoles, selected smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV and selected Meta Quest headsets are listed device categories. Selected games offer touch controls. | Availability depends on supported regions, devices, games and subscription or free-to-play eligibility. |
| Amazon Luna | Most games can use a controller or mouse and keyboard. The compatibility table lists mouse and keyboard for Mac, Windows and Chromebook. | Controller models vary by Fire TV, tablet, Samsung TV and LG TV; check the device-specific list. | Controller compatibility differs by mobile category. GameNight titles can use a phone as a controller. | Some browsers require permission for keyboard and mouse input. Third-party controllers may require drivers, and some features may be unavailable. |
When a controller is the best choice
A controller is the most portable and broadly supported option for cloud gaming. It suits console-style games, platformers, racing games, action titles and any setup where a TV or mobile client limits keyboard input. A controller can connect by Bluetooth or USB, but the supported models depend on the client.

GeForce NOW controllers
NVIDIA’s computer requirements list Microsoft Xbox controllers and Sony DualSense and DualShock 4 gamepads among supported options. The SHIELD controller is listed for SHIELD TV, while Android and iOS clients have their own supported-controller lists. Other gamepads may work, but drivers or firmware updates can be necessary. Treat the list for your specific client as authoritative rather than assuming a controller supported on a computer will work on a TV or phone.
Xbox Cloud Gaming controllers
Xbox’s current getting-started guidance tells players to connect a compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB. That is the safe default for cloud play. Some games expose Xbox touch controls, but touch support is a title-level feature, not a promise that every game can be played without a controller.
Amazon Luna controllers
Luna names Xbox, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Razer Kishi controllers as compatible examples. Its detailed table separates controller support by device category, so a controller listed for a computer may not have identical support on a television or mobile client. Amazon also warns that third-party controllers can need drivers and may not expose every feature.

Keyboard-and-mouse play on computers
Computer clients are generally the most practical place to use a keyboard and mouse because the operating system can expose both devices directly to the cloud-gaming app or browser. GeForce NOW explicitly supports mouse and keyboard on computer platforms and recommends a USB gaming mouse. Amazon Luna’s table lists mouse and keyboard for Mac, Windows and Chromebook.
That support still does not make every game keyboard-compatible. A title may accept only controller input, may map keyboard commands differently, or may require you to enable its keyboard controls in the game’s own settings. Browser permissions can also block input: Amazon notes that some browsers ask for permission to use a keyboard and mouse, and Chrome users should allow that request when it appears.
Choosing a mouse
A wired USB gaming mouse is the straightforward choice for a supported computer setup because it avoids Bluetooth pairing and many receiver issues. If the pointer or camera stutters in GeForce NOW, NVIDIA suggests trying a polling rate of 125 Hz. That is a troubleshooting setting, not a universal best setting; restore a higher rate if it behaves better on your system.

Keyboard limitations to watch for
- A keyboard that navigates a launcher may not send gameplay commands.
- Some browser clients require an explicit permission prompt before input reaches the game.
- Operating-system updates, missing drivers or vendor software can prevent a third-party keyboard or mouse from being recognized.
- Wireless devices add batteries, pairing and receiver variables that do not exist with USB connections.
Why TV cloud gaming is different
Television clients often have a deliberately narrower input model. GeForce NOW states: “You can only use a physical keyboard and mouse to navigate the app. You must use a supported gamepad to play games on TVs.” In practice, a keyboard may let you search for a title or move through menus, but it will not replace the gamepad once the game starts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteXbox Cloud Gaming and Luna also publish device-specific controller guidance for televisions and streaming devices. Before buying a controller for a TV, identify the exact client—such as a smart-TV app, a streaming stick or a console—and then check that client’s supported-controller list. Bluetooth availability on the television does not by itself guarantee that the cloud app will pass the device through for gameplay.
Phones and tablets: compact, but more restrictive
Mobile support should not be treated as interchangeable with computer support. A service may recognize a controller on Android or iOS while rejecting a keyboard and mouse, and a game can impose an additional restriction.

Fortnite’s mobile rule
Epic says mouse and keyboard cannot be used with Fortnite on mobile devices, including when Fortnite is accessed through Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW or Amazon Luna. This is a Fortnite-on-mobile rule; it is not evidence that every game on every cloud service rejects keyboard and mouse.
Making controller play comfortable
NVIDIA recommends a gamepad clip for attaching a controller to a phone in a handheld GeForce NOW setup. A clip is optional, but it can make the screen-and-controller combination easier to hold than placing the phone on a table. Confirm that the controller itself appears in the mobile client’s supported list before purchasing an attachment.

- Name the game. Look for the title’s own input requirements or control settings. Do not infer support from another game in the same service.
- Name the client device. Record whether you will use Windows, Mac, Chromebook, Android, iPhone or iPad, a browser, a smart TV, a streaming device, a console or a headset.
- Read the service’s device section. Check the provider’s current requirements for that exact platform, not a general controller list for another device.
- Choose the connection method. If Bluetooth is not listed or pairing is unreliable, use USB where the device permits it. For a mouse on a computer, USB avoids another wireless variable.
- Install required drivers or updates. Third-party controllers may need a driver, firmware update or manufacturer software before the cloud client can use them.
- Approve browser permissions. If a browser asks to share keyboard-and-mouse input, allow it for the cloud-gaming site you trust; otherwise the game may receive no keystrokes or pointer movement.
- Test in the actual game. Check movement, camera control, buttons and menu navigation. A device that works in the launcher is not proven to work during gameplay until you test it there.
Service-specific setup guidance
GeForce NOW
On a computer, connect the supported gamepad or USB mouse and keyboard before launching the client or browser session. For TV play, plan on a supported gamepad from the start; a physical keyboard and mouse will not substitute for it during gameplay. On SHIELD TV, use the listed SHIELD controller or another explicitly supported option. On Android and iOS, consult the mobile controller section rather than carrying over the computer list. If mouse movement is erratic, try NVIDIA’s 125 Hz polling-rate suggestion and retest.

Xbox Cloud Gaming
Connect a compatible controller through Bluetooth or USB, then confirm that your account, region, device and game meet the service’s cloud-play eligibility rules. Selected games display touch controls; if a game does not offer them, expect to use the controller. Keyboard-and-mouse support should be treated as title- and client-dependent rather than assumed from the fact that you are using a Windows browser.
Amazon Luna
For Mac, Windows or Chromebook, Luna’s compatibility table lists mouse and keyboard as available input choices, while controller models vary by device. If Chrome requests keyboard-and-mouse permission, allow it. On Fire TV, Samsung TV or LG TV, use the controller category for that television rather than the computer category. GameNight titles can use a phone as a controller, but that feature does not mean every Luna game accepts a phone as its primary control device.
Common failures and fixes
- The controller connects but the game ignores it: Recheck the client-specific supported list, reconnect by USB, update the controller and restart the cloud session.
- The keyboard works in menus but not in the game: This is often an app-navigation limitation or a game that expects a controller. Check the title’s controls and the service’s gameplay wording.
- The mouse is missing in a browser: Look for the browser permission prompt, grant it, then reload the session. Also check operating-system and mouse drivers.
- A TV does not respond to keyboard-and-mouse commands: On GeForce NOW, this is expected during gameplay; switch to a supported gamepad.
- A mobile game rejects keyboard and mouse: Check whether the title has a mobile-specific rule, such as Fortnite’s restriction, rather than assuming the service is broken.
- Buttons are mapped incorrectly: Try the controller family listed for that client, update firmware and review the game’s own control remapping options. A third-party device may connect while still lacking full feature support.
What to buy—and what not to assume
If your target is supported PC gameplay, a USB gaming mouse is a sensible category because NVIDIA explicitly recommends one for GeForce NOW computer use. It does not make keyboard-and-mouse play possible on a TV or overcome a game’s mobile restriction.
A compatible Bluetooth or USB controller is the safer general purchase for Xbox Cloud Gaming and for television play on services that require a gamepad. Select the model against the intended service and client device; no single controller is guaranteed across every platform. A phone gamepad clip is an optional accessory for handheld GeForce NOW use, not a substitute for checking mobile controller support.
A simple decision guide
- Playing on a TV: Start with a supported controller.
- Playing on a Windows, Mac or Chromebook computer: Keyboard and mouse may work, especially on GeForce NOW and Luna, but verify the game and browser permissions.
- Playing on a phone or tablet: Prefer a controller unless the specific game advertises touch controls; do not expect keyboard and mouse to transfer from the desktop version.
- Unsure about a title: Use the controller as the compatibility baseline, then confirm whether that game offers keyboard-and-mouse or touch input on your exact client.
The practical answer is therefore conditional: cloud gaming can support a controller, keyboard and mouse, but only the service-device-game combination determines which one actually works during gameplay.
