You can still use its automatic Turbo Boost and, on supported boards, tune memory separately, but neither is a conventional CPU multiplier overclock.
What the i7-10700’s 4.8 GHz rating means
Intel lists the i7-10700 with a 2.90 GHz base frequency and a maximum Turbo Boost frequency of up to 4.80 GHz. The maximum Turbo figure is the highest single-core frequency the processor can reach with Turbo Boost, not a guaranteed speed for every core or a manual overclock. Why a Z-series motherboard does not unlock it
Intel identifies K- and X-series processors as unlocked; the plain i7-10700 has neither suffix. Intel’s guidance says settings on locked processors cannot be custom tuned. What you can tune instead
Memory
Intel lists DDR4-2933 as the i7-10700’s memory type. Some compatible chipsets support memory overclocking, which is separate from raising the CPU multiplier. Turbo behavior and system limits
If performance is lower than expected, first check whether the processor is reaching its normal Turbo behavior and whether temperature or power limits are restricting it. The right checks and any available settings depend on the motherboard and system. Cooling
Better cooling can help manage heat, but it does not unlock a locked multiplier. Intel notes that higher speeds and voltages generate more heat, and that overheating can trigger automatic throttling. For systems where tuning is supported, Intel recommends establishing baseline performance, monitoring temperatures and voltage, and running extended stability tests. Should you try BCLK or power-limit changes?
Do not treat BCLK or power-limit adjustments as a universal workaround for the locked multiplier. Results depend on the processor sample, motherboard firmware, cooling, memory, workload, and power delivery; there is no established universal setting or performance gain for every i7-10700 system. Intel warns that frequency or voltage changes can void product warranties and may reduce stability, security, performance, or component life. Intel: Hardware requirements for overclocking.

For multiplier overclocking, Intel’s guidance calls for an unlocked K- or X-series processor and a motherboard that supports overclocking. Confirm socket, BIOS, and board support for the exact CPU and motherboard before buying or upgrading; replacing the processor may also mean replacing the board.
