Sometimes—but it depends on your carrier and phone. In the U.S., T-Mobile currently describes satellite picture messaging, selected app data and WhatsApp voice. Verizon’s documented Skylo service supports basic text messaging and text-based emergency SOS, not photos or general data. AT&T describes voice, data and text through AST SpaceMobile as a planned service and has not given a consumer access date.
What carrier satellite service can do today
Carrier satellite service is not a universal replacement for a cell tower. Each offering supports a different set of features, and compatible devices, software, location and satellite conditions matter. The comparison below reflects the U.S. services described by the carriers as of October 4, 2026.

| Service | Functions described | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile T-Satellite with Starlink | SMS, MMS and RCS text and picture messages; audio messages; location sharing; selected satellite-ready apps; and WhatsApp voice. | Data is intended for selected apps and limited by lower speeds and capacity. This is not documented as ordinary cellular voice calling or unrestricted broadband. |
| Verizon satellite via Skylo | Two-way basic text messaging and text-based Satellite SOS to 911 on selected Android phones. | MMS, RCS and attachments are unsupported. The documented feature does not provide calls or general app data. |
| AT&T and AST SpaceMobile | AT&T describes a planned service for voice, data and text on everyday phones in remote areas. | AT&T says it is too early to give a specific consumer access date. Planned capabilities are not the same as an available service. |
Apple’s built-in iPhone satellite features are a separate category, not another carrier plan. Apple says its own features use Globalstar and include emergency services, roadside assistance, messaging and location sharing in selected regions. A carrier may separately support operator-provided satellite features on compatible phones.

T-Mobile: WhatsApp voice, not documented ordinary cellular calling
T-Mobile says WhatsApp voice can work through T-Satellite. That means voice communication through a supported app, not a claim that a regular cellular phone call will connect over satellite. App behavior and availability can differ from cellular service.

Verizon: no calls in the documented Skylo feature
Verizon describes Skylo for basic text messaging and SOS. Its support information does not list voice calling as a feature.
AT&T: broader calling is planned
AT&T reports technical milestones with AST SpaceMobile, including a native voice call and text using AT&T spectrum and its core network in July 2025. That milestone does not establish that consumers can buy or use the service now; AT&T has not specified a consumer launch date.
Can you send photos or use data?
Photos and multimedia messages
T-Mobile lists picture messaging through SMS, MMS and RCS. Verizon’s Skylo service does not support MMS, RCS or attachments, so its documented basic texting should not be treated as a way to send photos.
App data and internet access
T-Mobile lists selected satellite-ready apps and says its growing app selection is optimized for lower speeds and limited capacity. Some functions may not work, or may behave differently than they do on a cellular connection. This is limited app connectivity, not a promise of ordinary broadband access.
Apple also notes that some operators may allow limited data for select apps on an operator-provided satellite network. Check the carrier’s supported apps and conditions rather than assuming that a phone can browse freely whenever it sees a satellite.

Which phones and conditions are required?
T-Mobile
T-Mobile says most smartphones from the last four years may work, but directs customers to its device eligibility list before relying on service. The phone is meant to connect automatically when no other service is available. T-Mobile lists coverage in the Continental U.S., Puerto Rico, Hawaii, parts of southern Alaska and a growing number of countries abroad; availability can vary within those areas.
Verizon
Verizon’s documented feature is for selected Android models: Samsung Galaxy S25, S25 Edge, S25+, S25 Ultra, Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, plus Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro, 9, Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. Google Messages must be the default messaging app. A clear line of sight to the satellite is required.
Verizon lists the Continental U.S., Hawaii and Alaska, while warning that service may not work in parts of Alaska.
Apple’s operator-provided features on iPhone
Apple’s guidance for operator-provided satellite features calls for iPhone 13 or later, the latest iOS and a supported network operator. Some operators may also require a supported plan. This compatibility guidance does not mean every carrier’s satellite service supports every eligible iPhone.
Outdoor access and sky visibility
Carrier guidance makes outdoor access and a clear view of the sky important conditions. Buildings, terrain, coverage limits or satellite conditions can prevent a connection. Messages may be delayed, and service can be limited or unavailable.

Do not confuse carrier service with iPhone’s built-in satellite features
Apple’s own satellite features on iPhone 14 or later use Globalstar and are available in selected regions. They include emergency services, roadside assistance, messaging friends and family, and location sharing. They are distinct from an operator’s satellite extension to its network. An iPhone’s built-in feature does not establish that the owner’s carrier plan supports satellite texting, calling or app data.

What does it cost, and where is it available?
Prices and inclusions are plan-specific and may change. T-Mobile lists T-Satellite as included with Experience Beyond 2.0 and Better Value plans; for other T-Mobile customers and non-customers it lists a limited-time $10-per-month option. Verizon says its documented Skylo SOS and messaging have no extra fee. Check each carrier’s live service and eligibility page for current terms and coverage before traveling or changing plans.
Satellite emergency texting is not guaranteed emergency service
T-Mobile describes satellite Text to 911 as text-only and warns that coverage, delays and location accuracy can limit it. Verizon’s Satellite SOS is also text-based and requires a supported Android phone and satellite line of sight. Neither should be treated as a guaranteed substitute for emergency communication. Read your device and carrier’s current emergency instructions and prepare before going somewhere without cellular coverage.
How to check whether your carrier supports what you need
- Identify the feature. Decide whether you need basic text, photo messaging, selected app data, app-based voice or emergency SOS. The carriers do not offer the same functions.
- Check your exact phone and software. Use the carrier’s eligibility page and verify any operating-system and default-messaging-app requirements.
- Check your plan and location. Confirm whether the feature is included, paid as an add-on or available at all in your destination.
- Plan for conditions. Expect to need outdoor access and sky visibility, and allow for delays or unavailable service. Do not rely on satellite access as guaranteed connectivity.
What planned satellite service claims do—and do not—tell you
Company announcements can describe network scale or technical design without showing what a consumer can use today. SpaceX/Starlink said in a February 2025 announcement that its Direct to Cell constellation had more than 400 satellites and that millions of messages had been sent during 2024 beta testing and emergency scenarios. Those are company-reported figures, not independent service measurements or guarantees for a user’s location.
AT&T describes BlueBird satellite beams with up to 40 MHz of capacity and peak data transmission speeds of up to 120 Mbps. These are design claims, not speeds a consumer can currently buy or expect to receive. AT&T also says AST SpaceMobile has more than 50 mobile-operator agreements worldwide; agreements do not mean all those providers have launched service.
