Can I leave a box fan on all night? It may be possible to do so safely if the fan is in good condition and used as its manufacturer directs, but there is no blanket assurance that every fan is safe to run unattended. Electrical Safety First, a UK consumer safety organization, recommends switching electric fans off overnight or when the home is empty. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency gives a narrower warning for pre-2012 box fans used in do-it-yourself air cleaners: do not use those unattended or while sleeping. For ordinary cooling, check your exact fan’s manual, inspect it, and keep it stable and unobstructed. The energy cost depends on the fan’s actual wattage, how long it runs, and your electricity rate.
What the safety advice says
Guidance differs by context, so the age-specific EPA advice for filtered air cleaners should not be mistaken for a rule about every box fan used for cooling.

General electric-fan use
Electrical Safety First advises against leaving electric fans running overnight or while a home is empty. Its guidance is UK consumer safety advice, not a universal legal requirement. It recommends placing a fan where it cannot be knocked over, keeping its cable away from children and pets, inspecting fans and cables after storage, and unplugging a fan if it smells burnt or makes an unusual noise. It also advises avoiding second-hand fans. See Electrical Safety First’s electric-fan advice.
Box fans used with DIY air-cleaner filters
The EPA’s guidance applies specifically to box fans used in do-it-yourself air cleaners. For this setup, it advises using a newer fan made in 2012 or later, looking for third-party UL 507 or equivalent verification, following the manufacturer’s instructions, and not using a damaged or malfunctioning fan or an extension cord. The EPA specifically says not to leave a pre-2012 fan in a DIY air cleaner unattended or running while you sleep. It also advises keeping working smoke detectors throughout the home. These are precautions for filtered air-cleaner use; they do not establish an age-based restriction for all box fans used for cooling.

What fan-safety testing found—and what it cannot prove
As summarized by the EPA on its 2023 webpage, Chemical Insights Research Institute of UL tested five box-fan models in DIY air-cleaner configurations with clean and smoke- or dust-loaded filters. One test simulated an extreme obstruction by blocking both the front and back of a fan for seven hours. The EPA reports that the tested fan components stayed below recognized temperature safety standards and that no tested scenario showed an observable fire hazard.
That result is reassuring for the configurations tested, but it is not a guarantee for every fan, age, filter, obstruction, or operating condition: the study covered only several models and setups. Read the EPA’s account of the DIY air-cleaner testing and its limitations.

Reduce risk before leaving a fan running
- Check the manual for your specific model and follow its operating and placement instructions.
- Inspect the fan body, plug, and cord. Do not use a unit that is damaged, malfunctioning, or behaving unusually.
- Set the fan on a stable surface where it cannot be knocked over, and keep it clear of loose fabric and other obstructions.
- Keep the fan and its electrical connections away from water; route the cord so people and pets will not catch on it.
- Stop the fan and unplug it if you notice a burning smell or unusual noise.
- For a DIY filtered air cleaner, follow the EPA’s separate recommendations for fan age, safety verification, extension cords, and filter care.
These steps reduce avoidable hazards; they do not make a damaged or unsuitable fan safe for overnight use.
How much electricity does a box fan use overnight?

Energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh) = watts × hours ÷ 1,000
Electrical Safety First gives a general range of 15–100 watts for electric fans, depending on fan type and speed; it is not a measured range for every box fan. At that range, an eight-hour night would use 0.12–0.8 kWh, calculated as 15 × 8 ÷ 1,000 and 100 × 8 ÷ 1,000. To estimate the cost, multiply the kWh used by your electricity price per kWh. Your fan’s wattage and local tariff determine your actual result.

Is a box-fan filter relevant to overnight cooling?
No special filter is needed for ordinary fan cooling. Attaching a filter turns the fan into a DIY air cleaner, which is a separate use with different safety and maintenance considerations. For wildfire-smoke conditions, consult the EPA’s DIY air-cleaner guidance; it notes that cleaner performance varies by design and advises checking filters daily during smoke events, replacing one when it becomes dark or smells of smoke.
