Yes. You can use an address at your own domain without operating mail-server software: a hosted email provider can manage a full mailbox, or an email-routing service can forward incoming messages to an inbox you already use. The key difference is that forwarding alone does not let you send replies from your custom address.
Choose between forwarding and a hosted mailbox
Your domain can stay yours while another company handles the mail infrastructure. Which service you need depends on whether you only want to receive messages or want to send and receive as the custom address.

If you only need to receive mail, use forwarding
A forwarding service accepts mail addressed to your domain and redirects it to an existing mailbox, such as a personal inbox. Cloudflare describes Email Routing as free forwarding for custom addresses; it requires Cloudflare DNS and provider-configured routing records. Forwarding does not create a full mailbox at your domain. Cloudflare’s documentation says replies to forwarded mail are sent from the destination address—for example, a Gmail address—not from the custom address that received the message. Forwarding can also interact with sender authentication checks; Cloudflare documents Sender Rewriting Scheme behavior for forwarded messages in its Postmaster guidance.

If you need to send and receive, choose hosted email
A hosted email provider manages the mailbox and mail systems, while you continue to control the domain. Proton documents using a custom domain with Proton Mail for sending and receiving after the domain owner configures the required DNS records in its custom-domain setup guide.
Compare providers based on the number of domains and addresses supported, mailbox access and storage, privacy or encryption features, setup and migration effort, and current price. Plan limits and terms change, so check the provider’s current plan information rather than assuming a particular feature is included.

What DNS setup involves
DNS records tell other mail systems where to deliver messages and help recipients check whether messages claiming to come from your domain are authorized.
Recommended Free Tools
- MX records direct incoming mail to the email provider or routing service.
- SPF identifies systems permitted to send mail for your domain.
- DKIM adds a cryptographic signature that receiving systems can verify.
- DMARC tells receiving systems how to handle messages that fail the domain’s authentication policy and can enable aggregate reporting.
The provider supplies the exact values to publish. Check your existing DNS records before making changes: Cloudflare warns that SPF has a 10-DNS-lookup limit and advises merging with an existing SPF record rather than publishing duplicates. Its overview of SPF, DKIM, and DMARC explains these records and their roles.

Correct authentication setup helps receiving systems assess mail, but it does not guarantee that every message will reach an inbox. Forwarding and hosted sending have different configurations, so follow the instructions for the service actually handling each part of your mail.

- Decide what you need: choose forwarding if you only need inbound mail delivered to an existing inbox; choose hosted custom-domain email if you need to send and receive as your domain.
- Keep control of your domain: use the domain’s DNS settings to publish the records specified by the selected provider. For Cloudflare Email Routing, Cloudflare says DNS must be managed through Cloudflare.
- Configure records carefully: add the provider’s MX and authentication records, checking for existing MX or SPF records that could conflict. Use the exact values in the provider’s current instructions.
- Verify the destination or mailbox: for forwarding, confirm the destination inbox as required by the service; for hosted email, complete the provider’s domain and mailbox setup.
- Test both directions you intend to use: send a message to the custom address and, if you need outbound mail, send from that address and check the reply identity. Do not assume a forwarding rule enables custom-address sending.
Cloudflare’s onboarding guidance says DNS changes may take up to 24 hours to propagate globally, though it usually takes 5–15 minutes for domains using Cloudflare DNS. Those are Cloudflare’s estimates, not a universal guarantee for every DNS provider.

Changing providers does not mean giving up the address
The address remains tied to your domain, not permanently to the mail provider. If you change providers, you can update the domain’s email routing and authentication records to the new provider’s instructions. Plan for the switch by checking which records must be replaced and which existing records serve other services; changing mail DNS without that check can interrupt delivery or authentication.
