Yes—you can keep using a Google Pixel after it leaves Google’s update-support period. The phone does not automatically stop working, and apps do not necessarily stop opening on the end date. What changes is that Google no longer lists that exact model for Android version updates and security updates. Continuing to use it becomes a personal decision about the accounts, data and risk you are willing to place on a device with a known support gap.
First identify the exact model and the Android security-update level shown in Settings. Then compare those details with Google’s current support schedule, because Pixel support is model-specific rather than one rule for every generation.

What “stops receiving updates” actually means
A Pixel reaching the end of its published support period means Google no longer promises that model new Android releases or the security updates included in its model-specific schedule. It does not mean the handset suddenly stops powering on, loses its existing features or becomes unusable on a particular day. The official material does not establish either an instant failure or a universal “safe” age for every owner.

That distinction matters. A phone can remain physically reliable and continue running installed applications while its manufacturer-supported firmware becomes dated. You are choosing whether the device’s remaining usefulness outweighs the consequences of missing future vendor fixes. The Android Security Bulletin explains the kinds of vulnerabilities addressed in security releases, but it does not provide a probability calculator for the compromise risk of one particular unsupported Pixel (Android Security Bulletin—May 2026).

Check your Pixel before deciding
Do not infer support from the phone’s appearance, purchase date or the fact that it recently downloaded something. Check the model and patch information directly, then use Google’s live list.
- Find the model and patch level. Open Settings and use its search field for “Model” and “Android security update” if the menu layout is unfamiliar. Google identifies both pieces of information as available in Settings; labels and locations can vary by Android release (Google Pixel software-update help).
- Match the exact model to Google’s schedule. A Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold do not share the same launch date, but Google groups the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generations and Pixel Fold under a five-year OS-and-security period. The schedule is measured from when each model first became available on the Google Store in the United States.
- Allow for staged delivery. If a supported phone has not received an update that Google has announced, rollout timing can depend on the carrier and device. Google says delivery can take a few weeks, so a short delay is not proof that support has ended.
- Record the date you actually see. Note the Android version and security-update month displayed in Settings. That gives you a concrete basis for deciding whether an apparent gap is a rollout delay or an end-of-support condition.
Google’s published support periods by Pixel generation
The following periods are Google’s stated support groups, not predictions about battery life, hardware durability or an individual owner’s acceptable risk.
| Pixel models | Published OS and security period | How Google counts it |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 8 and later models in Google’s seven-year group | Seven years | From first availability on the Google Store in the US |
| Pixel 6 generation, Pixel 7 generation and Pixel Fold | Five years | From first availability on the Google Store in the US |
| Pixel 5a and earlier generations listed on Google’s end-of-support page | No longer receiving Android version updates or security updates | Use the current Google list for the exact model and any policy changes |
Google’s current schedule places Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, the Pixel 9 generation, Pixel 10 generation and Pixel 11 generation in the seven-year OS-and-security group. The schedule is the authority for a particular handset, and Google can revise product listings or policy, so check the live page rather than relying on a remembered cutoff (Google’s current Pixel support schedule).

Why the Pixel 8 promise is often misunderstood
In an October 4, 2023 announcement, Google said Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro would receive seven years of software support, including Android operating-system upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops. The statement was attributed to Seang Chau, vice president of engineering, and Shenaz Zack, director of product management: “We’re committing to providing seven years of software support for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, including the latest Android operating system, security updates and ongoing Feature Drops.” That announcement does not extend seven years to older Pixels or automatically determine the support term for every later model; use the current model table for those decisions (Google’s Pixel 8 software-support announcement).
What may still update after full Pixel support ends
Ending the model-specific period does not necessarily stop every software-delivery channel on the same day. Google says its applications can be updated through Google Play. Android’s Mainline architecture also allows selected system components to be updated outside the normal Android release cycle, either through Google Play system updates or through a partner-provided over-the-air mechanism (Google Pixel privacy and security features; Android Mainline documentation).
Those channels cover selected components, not a renewed promise of comprehensive Pixel firmware support. Seeing a recent app version or a newer Google Play system component does not prove that the phone has resumed receiving the full Android operating-system and security updates listed for supported models.

- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
Android’s Mainline documentation also states that support for Android 11 and lower concluded in the fourth quarter of 2025. That is a platform-level statement, not a substitute for checking your Pixel’s model and current Android version. It cannot by itself tell you how long a particular handset remains supported.
How to decide whether keeping the phone is sensible
There is no official universal cutoff at which every unsupported Pixel becomes unsafe. Make the decision by combining support status with what the device does for you and what a security problem would affect.
Keep using it when the trade-off fits your situation
- The phone still performs the tasks you need and the exact model’s support status is understood.
- You accept that future Android and vendor security fixes are not promised after the listed period.
- The accounts and information accessed on the device have consequences you are comfortable evaluating without a numeric risk estimate.
- You are prepared to distinguish ordinary app or Google Play system updates from full model support.
These points do not certify an unsupported phone as safe. They describe an informed choice to continue using hardware that still works while accepting the support gap.

Consider replacing it sooner when the consequences are high
- The Pixel handles accounts or data for which an unpatched platform problem would be especially serious.
- You require continuing Android version upgrades, security updates or Feature Drops as a condition of using the phone.
- Your model is already on Google’s “no longer receiving” list and you do not want to monitor a support gap.
- The remaining usefulness of the handset no longer justifies the cost or disruption of running an unsupported operating system.
A supported replacement is an option, not a requirement imposed on every owner. Compare the replacement’s remaining published support window and cost with the fact that your current device already meets your everyday needs. Google’s schedule supplies the update-window comparison; it does not establish a universal replacement price or a mandatory exchange date.

“My old Pixel just downloaded an update, so it must still be supported.”
Identify what updated. An application update or a Google Play system component can arrive through channels separate from the model’s full Android and security schedule. Confirm the Android version and security-update level in Settings and compare the model with Google’s support page.
“The phone still works, so the support date cannot matter.”
Physical usability and manufacturer support are different conditions. Continued operation tells you that the hardware and installed software are functioning; it does not establish that Google will provide future OS or security fixes for that model.

“A missed update means Google has ended support.”
Supported updates can roll out gradually and may depend on carrier and device, with delivery taking a few weeks. Check again after the rollout window and verify the exact model before concluding that the support period has ended.
“Every Pixel gets the same number of years.”
Google’s schedule is model-specific. The current groups include seven years for Pixel 8 and later models listed there, five years for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generations and Pixel Fold, and an end-of-support listing that includes Pixel 5a and earlier generations. Do not apply the Pixel 8 promise to an older phone.
A practical decision checklist
- Write down the exact Pixel model shown in Settings.
- Write down the Android version and security-update month shown there.
- Open Google’s current Pixel software-update schedule and locate that model.
- If the model is supported, allow for Google’s stated gradual rollout and carrier or device variation before treating a delay as a failure.
- If the model is outside the period, list the accounts and data you use on it and judge how consequential a security gap would be for you.
- Check whether the recent update you noticed was an app or selected system component rather than a full Android and security release.
- Choose between continued use with the known gap and a supported replacement based on that risk-and-need assessment.
The bottom line for an unsupported Pixel
You can keep using a Pixel after it stops receiving updates, but “still works” is not the same as “still supported.” Verify the exact model and patch level, use Google’s current schedule, and treat app or Mainline component updates as narrower than full OS and security coverage. Google publishes five-year and seven-year model groups, yet no source establishes a single safe-use deadline or a compromise probability for every unsupported phone. The right choice depends on the device’s role, the consequences of a security issue and your willingness to accept the documented support gap.
