Books already downloaded to a Kindle remained readable in the specific case of Amazon’s 2025 USB-transfer change. That does not establish that every downloaded book will keep working indefinitely if an Amazon account closes, software or a device stops working, or a different service ends. What happens depends on whether you bought the book, borrowed it through a subscription, closed your own account, or a publisher left Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).
What happens in each situation?
| Situation | What Amazon says | What it means for access |
|---|---|---|
| You close your Amazon account | Amazon says Kindle content and subscriptions tied to the account, along with account-created notes and annotations, will no longer be available. Amazon Customer Service: What Happens When I Close My Account? | Do not close the account if you want to retain access to its Kindle content. |
| Your subscription ends | Amazon’s UK Kindle Store terms say subscription content is available only while you are an active member of the relevant program. Amazon UK Kindle Store terms | Subscription titles are not equivalent to individually purchased books; access depends on active membership. |
| A publisher closes its KDP account | Amazon says it will unpublish the publisher’s books, but may retain digital copies to provide continuing access or re-downloads to customers who bought them before closure. Amazon KDP: What happens when I close my KDP account? | This concerns a publisher leaving KDP, not a reader closing an Amazon account. Amazon’s wording is conditional. |
| A particular Kindle feature ends | Amazon’s notice, reproduced in a customer forum, said Download & Transfer via USB would end on February 26, 2025, while books already downloaded on a Kindle could still be read. Amazon Customer Forums: Download and Transfer via USB | That assurance applied to the stated feature change. It is not a general promise about all future service changes or account closures. |
Does buying a Kindle book mean you own a permanent, independent file?
Do not assume that “buy” means you receive an unrestricted file that works independently of Amazon. The cited Amazon UK Kindle Store terms describe a non-exclusive right to view, use, and display Kindle content through Kindle software or as otherwise permitted as part of the service. The exact terms can vary by marketplace, so check the agreement for the country where you acquired the book; the UK wording does not establish the contract or legal treatment in every jurisdiction.

That distinction matters most if your Amazon account becomes unavailable or you need to access a book on a new device. A local download may let you read in some circumstances, but the cited sources do not promise that a downloaded copy will remain usable indefinitely if the account, required software, or Amazon service is no longer available.

Amazon’s notice said that, beginning February 26, 2025, customers could no longer download and transfer Kindle content via USB, while books previously downloaded on a Kindle device could still be read there. The notice was reproduced in an Amazon customer-forum post, so treat it as a historical statement about that specific change—not as a broader guarantee that downloaded books are immune to other changes.

- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
The practical distinction is between reading a title that is already on a device and obtaining it again from Amazon. If a book is no longer available to download through a method you relied on, an existing on-device copy may matter. But the notice does not settle what happens if the account itself is closed, the device or software becomes unusable, or a different service is discontinued.
Do notes, highlights, and reading position have an independent backup?
Amazon describes Kindle sync as saving reading position, notes, and highlights to its servers for linked Kindle devices and apps. Sync requires an internet connection. That makes it an account-linked synchronization feature, not evidence of a separate archive that would survive loss of access to the account or service. How to reduce avoidable loss of access
- Keep the Amazon account open if you want continued access to its Kindle content, subscriptions, and account-linked notes.
- Separate subscription titles from purchases. Check whether each title is borrowed through an active membership or bought individually; Amazon’s cited UK terms make subscription access dependent on active membership.
- Check the terms for your marketplace. Amazon’s Kindle Store agreement is not necessarily identical across countries.
- Do not treat a download as a guarantee. The USB notice supports only the narrow claim that previously downloaded books remained readable on a Kindle in that particular change.
- Distinguish publisher changes from your own account status. Amazon may retain copies after a KDP publisher account closes to support existing customers, but that does not override the stated consequences of closing your customer account.
Bottom line
Whether you can keep reading depends on what changed. Amazon says closing your customer account removes access to its linked Kindle content and subscriptions; subscription access is tied to active membership under the cited UK terms. A publisher leaving KDP is different, and Amazon may retain books for existing buyers. The 2025 USB notice showed that books already downloaded to a Kindle remained readable during that specific feature change, but it does not guarantee access through every future disruption.
