Yes—Linux can be a practical way to keep a PC that cannot run Windows 11 in service, but Windows 11 ineligibility does not guarantee that every Linux distribution, device component, or Windows app will work. Before replacing Windows, identify the specific Windows 11 requirement your PC fails, back up your files, and test a Linux desktop from a USB stick on the actual machine.
What a Windows 11 rejection tells you—and what it does not
Check the result in Microsoft’s PC Health Check app or through Windows Update, then note the specific requirement that is not met. Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements explain the eligibility checks. The rejection alone does not tell you whether the problem is the processor, TPM, Secure Boot, memory, or something else—and it does not establish whether Linux will support your hardware.

Windows 10’s ordinary support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says an unsupported Windows version no longer receives standard Microsoft software and security updates, leaving the device more exposed to security risks. See Microsoft’s explanation of what it means when Windows isn’t supported. Any extended-support option depends on the Windows edition and the user’s circumstances; check Microsoft’s current terms rather than assuming they apply.

A live USB session is a useful compatibility check because you can start Ubuntu without installing it or making permanent changes to the PC. Ubuntu recommends checking its trial instructions and certified-hardware information, while noting that trying the system directly is also an option.

- Prepare a USB stick. Ubuntu’s instructions specify a stick of at least 8 GB. Save anything on it elsewhere: creating bootable media erases the selected USB drive’s existing contents. Follow Ubuntu’s bootable USB instructions.
- Boot the PC from the USB. Use the computer’s boot menu to start the Ubuntu media, then choose the option to try Ubuntu rather than install it. The exact key and menu vary by computer model.
- Test the hardware and tasks you rely on. Check Wi-Fi or Ethernet, sound, display brightness and resolution, keyboard, touchpad, Bluetooth, sleep and wake, and any essential external devices. Open the kinds of files and services you use regularly.
- Investigate a missing device before ruling it out. Ubuntu’s live preview uses open-source drivers only. Some proprietary drivers—including drivers needed by some NVIDIA graphics hardware—may not be available in the preview but can be enabled during or after installation. Check the relevant device and driver guidance before deciding that a component cannot work.
Choose a distribution that fits the machine
Linux is a family of operating systems, not one hardware specification. Requirements and available drivers vary by distribution and release, so do not treat a single distribution’s minimums as universal. For example, Ubuntu’s download page lists these requirements for Ubuntu Desktop 26.04:
- 2 GHz dual-core processor or better
- 6 GB of memory
- 25 GB of free disk space
Those figures apply to Ubuntu Desktop 26.04, not to Linux as a whole. Ubuntu’s 26.04 LTS release notes describe five years of security updates and critical bug fixes, through April 2031, for that release. If the PC falls short of Ubuntu Desktop’s requirements, Ubuntu suggests considering a lighter Ubuntu flavor. Check the current requirements and hardware support for the specific release you plan to use.

Back up first and check what could block installation
Copy files you need to another drive or a trusted backup location before installing. Ubuntu’s installation guide warns that BitLocker encryption can prevent the installer from safely installing Ubuntu alongside Windows. Some PCs configured with Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) also cannot proceed until the storage configuration is changed.
Do not change encryption or storage settings, or alter partitions, unless you understand the consequences and have verified your backup. If you choose an installer option that erases the disk, it deletes the existing contents on the selected disk. Confirm the selected drive and backup before proceeding. Installing alongside Windows is a different choice, but whether it is available and appropriate depends on encryption and the disk layout.

Decide whether replacing Windows is right for your needs
Make the decision around the work the PC must do, not just the Windows 11 eligibility message. A Linux live session can show how the hardware behaves, but it cannot guarantee that every Windows application or accessory has a Linux equivalent or works the same way. List your essential apps, peripherals, and tasks, then verify them for the distribution you intend to install.
