Yes, Windows 11 Setup may let you proceed on some PCs that fail its hardware checks, but doing so leaves the device unsupported. Microsoft warns that compatibility problems may occur and that updates—including security updates—are not guaranteed. Check exactly which requirement your PC fails before changing settings or starting an installation; using a USB installer does not make incompatible hardware eligible.
Check what your PC fails before deciding
Windows 11’s minimum requirements are specific. Microsoft lists a compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-or-later graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a display at least 9 inches diagonally with 720p resolution and 8 bits per color channel. Windows 11 Home also requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial device setup. An upgrade through Windows Update requires Windows 10 version 2004 or later. These are minimums, not a promise that every feature will work on a borderline device. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.

Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check or check Windows Update to identify the specific failed check. If a setting such as TPM or Secure Boot appears to be the issue, consult the computer maker’s documentation before changing firmware settings; menus and capabilities vary by model. RAM or storage may be upgradeable, but confirm that for your model. Processor eligibility depends on Microsoft’s supported CPU list, not only clock speed and core count. Microsoft’s PC Health Check guidance explains how to check eligibility.
Understand the consequences of an unsupported installation
Microsoft does not recommend installing Windows 11 on a device that fails its requirements. It says the PC will not receive Microsoft support, compatibility issues may occur, and updates are not guaranteed—including security updates. Its warning also says the PC will not be entitled to updates and that damage caused by incompatibility is not covered under the manufacturer warranty. Installation may complete, but that does not change the device’s support status.

“This PC doesn’t meet the minimum system requirements for running Windows 11 – these requirements help ensure a more reliable and higher quality experience. Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues. If you proceed with installing Windows 11, your PC will no longer be supported and won’t be entitled to receive updates. Damages to your PC due to lack of compatibility aren’t covered under the manufacturer warranty.”
That is Microsoft’s disclaimer in its unsupported-device support article. Microsoft does not quantify the likelihood of a particular PC experiencing problems, so there is no reliable risk percentage to apply to your machine.

Choose an installation route—and know what it does to your files
Microsoft documents installing Windows 11 by running Setup from within Windows or by booting from installation media. These are installation routes, not ways to satisfy a failed requirement or remove the unsupported-device warning. If you create or carry installation media, a USB flash drive holds the installer; it does not fix incompatibility. Microsoft’s cited instructions do not specify a minimum drive capacity or endorse a particular model.

Run Setup from within Windows
With installation media attached, open it in your current Windows installation and start Setup. Depending on the options offered, you can keep personal files and apps, keep personal files only, or keep nothing. Review the selection before continuing; it determines what remains after installation.

Boot from media for a fresh installation
Starting the computer from installation media to perform a fresh install erases the existing Windows installation, files, and installed apps on the drive. Back up anything you need before proceeding. Microsoft recommends checking hardware requirements with PC Health Check before a fresh install.
Compare your practical options
| Option | What to check | Data and support implications |
|---|---|---|
| Address the failed requirement | Ask the PC maker whether the component is upgradeable or the relevant firmware feature is available on your model. | Eligibility may be restored if the device can meet the requirements; confirm the result with PC Health Check or Windows Update. |
| Run Setup from within Windows | Review the choices Setup presents: keep files and apps, keep files only, or keep nothing. | Your selection controls what Setup retains. If the PC still fails a requirement, the unsupported-device warning still applies. |
| Boot from installation media | Confirm the target drive and back up needed data before starting. | A fresh installation wipes the existing Windows installation, files, and apps. Installation media does not make the hardware supported. |
| Keep the current Windows installation | Check the current operating system’s support status and your device’s eligibility for Windows 11. | Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft’s stated free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. |
Know the rollback window before upgrading
If an upgrade causes problems, Microsoft says the built-in Go back option is available for 10 days. On an unsupported Windows 11 device, find it under Settings > System > Recovery. After the files needed for rollback are removed, that built-in option is no longer available. Microsoft recommends returning to Windows 10 if an unsupported installation causes issues; however, Windows 10’s free support services ended on October 14, 2025, under Microsoft’s stated lifecycle terms. Read Microsoft’s instructions for going back and its Windows 10 end-of-support notice.
