Yes, you can use Microsoft Office on an HP Stream in S mode, but installing the desktop apps may require switching out of S mode. If you want to keep S mode, use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote in a browser instead. That distinction matters: using Office online is not the same as installing desktop Office.
Can you install desktop Office without leaving S mode?
Windows in S mode is designed to run apps installed from Microsoft Store. If the desktop Office installer you need is not available there, Microsoft says you must switch out of S mode to install apps from other sources. HP likewise explains that legacy Win32 desktop apps do not run in S mode.

Switching out is free, but Microsoft describes it as a one-way change: you cannot return to S mode through the normal switching process. Before you proceed, decide whether you need the desktop apps enough to give up that restricted app-installation mode.

Use Office in a browser and keep S mode
If basic document editing is enough, go to Microsoft365.com, sign in with a Microsoft account, and open the free web versions of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. OneNote is also available in a browser. This route does not require switching out of S mode or installing the desktop Office suite.

Browser Office is a practical choice for creating and editing online documents, but it does not provide every feature of the desktop apps. Online files need an internet connection. A Microsoft 365 subscription is not required to access the free web versions, though a subscription offers additional apps and services.

Check your HP Stream before installing desktop Office
“HP Stream” covers more than one configuration. For example, HP lists the 11-ak0053dx with Windows 11 Home in S mode, but that does not tell you which Windows edition or hardware is in another Stream. Check your exact model and installed Windows version before choosing an installation route.
Microsoft’s current Windows 11 minimums include 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB or larger storage. The storage minimum is for Windows 11; it is not an Office installation requirement and does not indicate how much free space your laptop has.

These are product requirements, not a guarantee that an HP Stream with minimum specifications will feel fast or have enough usable storage after Windows and other files are accounted for. Check the requirements for your specific edition, Windows version, and system architecture before purchase or installation.

How to switch out of S mode for desktop apps
Only follow these steps if you accept that switching is one-way and the desktop installer is not available to you through Microsoft Store.
- On the HP Stream, open Settings and go to System > Activation.
- Find the section for switching to Windows 11 Home or Pro and select the link to open Microsoft Store. The wording can vary by Windows version.
- In Microsoft Store, open the S mode switch page and select Get. Follow the prompts to complete the switch. Do not select an option to upgrade your Windows edition unless that is what you intend to do.
- After the switch completes, install Office using the installer for the Office edition and license you own.
If the Store switch option is missing, confirm the Windows edition and version shown under Settings > System > About, and use Microsoft’s current S mode instructions for that Windows release. The S mode flow differs by Windows version; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so an unsupported Windows 10 installation should not be relied on for ongoing security updates.

Which route should you choose?
- Choose Office for the web if you mainly need common document tasks and want to retain S mode.
- Consider desktop Office if you depend on features that are missing from the web apps, and are comfortable with the one-way S mode change.
- Before buying or installing, verify the exact Stream configuration, available storage, Windows version, and Office license. Meeting minimum requirements does not establish that an unspecified Stream will deliver a good experience.
