Usually, yes. “Unsupported” often means the manufacturer has not certified or committed to support Linux on that model; it does not mean Linux is technically unable to run on it. Whether it will work well depends on the laptop’s specific components, firmware, Linux distribution and version, and which features you need.
What “unsupported” means for a laptop
There is no single universal list of laptops that can or cannot run Linux. A manufacturer may decline to certify Linux or limit its help to the operating system that shipped with the laptop. That is different from the Linux distribution itself lacking support for a particular device, and neither statement alone proves that the laptop cannot boot Linux.

Compatibility is component-specific. A laptop may start Linux successfully while having a problem with Wi-Fi, graphics acceleration, suspend, or another feature. A report that a model boots is therefore not confirmation that every part you rely on works.
Check the exact hardware before installing
Start with the full laptop model and, where possible, the hardware identifiers for its components. Variants sold under the same model name can use different wireless cards or other parts. Check the distribution’s current hardware and installation documentation, then look for reports about the same model and components. Debian’s stable amd64 installation guide recommends gathering hardware information and checking compatibility during preparation.

- Intel Core i5-1335U Processor (12M Cache, 12 Threads, up to 4.6 GHz) - 256GB Solid State Drive - 16GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Non-Touch Anti-Glare Display - Intel UHD 620 Integrated Graphics - Stereo Speakers
- 720p HD Webcam with Privacy Shutter. Integrated Microphone - Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC (2x2) 8265, Bluetooth Version 4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 3.1 Type-C 3.1, Headphone/Mic Combo Port, 4-in-1 Card Reader, HDMI, Kensington Mini-Lock Slot
- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
Pay particular attention to the hardware and functions that matter to you:
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, including the wireless chipset
- Graphics, including any dedicated GPU and the graphics acceleration you need
- Storage detection and the current firmware storage-controller setting
- Touchpad, audio, webcam, brightness controls, and external displays
- Suspend and resume, especially if you rely on sleep between sessions
If you cannot identify a component from the laptop’s specifications, gather its hardware ID from the operating system already installed or consult the manufacturer’s documentation. Check reports for the same component and Linux distribution/version where possible, rather than assuming that a result for a similarly named laptop applies to yours.

Try a live USB and check the features you need
Many Linux distributions offer a live environment that runs from installation media without first installing to the internal drive. If your chosen distribution provides one, use it to check whether the installer boots and whether essential devices work. A live session is a useful compatibility check, not a guarantee that every feature will behave identically after installation or updates.
- Prepare the installer: Download the image and follow the selected distribution’s instructions to create bootable USB media.
- Boot the USB: Use the laptop’s documented boot menu or firmware procedure. Note whether it starts in the same UEFI or legacy mode you intend to use for installation.
- Test your essentials: Check Wi-Fi, audio, touchpad, webcam, brightness keys, suspend and resume, external displays, and graphics acceleration as applicable.
- Check the internal drive: Confirm that the live environment or installer detects it before changing any storage-controller setting.
- Decide with the limitations in view: If an essential feature fails, look for a documented driver or firmware solution for that exact hardware and distribution before proceeding.
Testing from USB does not change the internal operating system by itself, but installing Linux or altering partitions can erase data. Back up files you need before making those changes; Debian’s installation preparation guidance includes backing up existing data.

UEFI and Secure Boot are not automatic blockers
Do not assume you must disable Secure Boot just because a laptop is not Linux-certified. Ubuntu’s UEFI Secure Boot documentation explains that firmware checks boot components against trusted keys, and Ubuntu supplies signed boot components. With enforcement enabled, unsigned kernel modules will not load; some third-party modules can use Ubuntu’s signing and Machine Owner Key (MOK) enrollment process, which includes enrollment at reboot.
The exact procedure depends on the distribution, its version, and the laptop. Follow the distribution’s documented route for Secure Boot and any needed drivers first. Change firmware settings only when instructions for your specific issue call for it.

Investigate storage or driver problems before ruling the laptop out
A missing disk or nonworking device may point to a specific configuration or driver issue, rather than a laptop-wide incompatibility. For example, Dell’s Ubuntu installation guide discusses storage mode and AHCI/NVMe detection as well as third-party graphics and Wi-Fi drivers. Those details describe Dell’s workflow and should not be treated as instructions for every manufacturer.

If you plan to keep Windows, do not casually switch the storage mode between RAID and AHCI or make other boot-configuration changes. Dell warns that changing storage mode can prevent an existing Windows installation from booting. Check instructions for your exact laptop and operating system before changing firmware settings, and keep a recovery plan.

Install only after you have a workable plan
Before committing to an installation, make sure you know which distribution and version you are installing, which essential functions have been tested, and what you will do if a device needs additional firmware or drivers. Back up your files before partitioning or replacing an operating system. After installation, use the distribution’s documented update and driver procedures rather than applying instructions meant for another laptop or distribution.
Manufacturer support is a separate consideration from technical compatibility. Dell says that installing a non-original operating system is at the owner’s risk and may receive limited Dell support; that is Dell-specific guidance, not a universal policy for all laptop makers.
